    TPWD Draw Hunt Questions

Been putting in for multiple hunts for three years now and have not drawn anything yet. Really wish I had started putting in a LONG time ago. I can't really find a good explanation of how the points and group drawings work.

I understand what a point system is from applying out west, but how does ours work in Texas? Does the drawing go to the highest points holders?

Does putting in as a group help your odds or hurt your odds?

There is no system at all. It is luck of the draw but your 'loyalty' points are cubed now. Years prior, you only had 1 entry per point. Cubed means if you have 2 points, the 2x2x2 would give you the points you have for that category.

Applying with groups can hurt and help you honestly. If someone has 15 points and the 3 others have 1 point each then they add them and divide by the number of applicants. the one with most points will be hurt but the others will benefit from it.

Look at it this way. You have 3 points. You get 3 tickets put in the drum. The other guy has 10 points. He gets 10 tickets put in the drum. Either of you can get drawn but he has a 10-3 better chance of getting drawn.

Don't feel bad. I have 17 points in most categories and still haven't gotten drawn.

That has to be either Pronghorn , Exotic, or Mulies or you are very selective in the hunts. I have 15 in some but got lucky this year and drew with 11 [emoji3060] in GDM

Actually they are cubing this year its 1000-27 better chance of getting drawn, much different odds than before, points actually mean more now

So I normally spend around $100 on the draw a year plus I have two youth hunters and I put in for three tags for each section for them, which is the limit for youths. All total we have 50ish tags we apply for and we normally get a tag or two a year.

The lottery is pretty rough and I get where they are going with cubing points but still it only takes one point to win.

There are a lot of people out there that add their kids to their non-youth tags, for free, since they were 5 years old so we are all competing with 12 year olds that have 7 points already.

I am not a hater. It's just the way it is and I still have fun putting in for the lottery. $100 a year is still A TON less then a lease

$100 is nothing, there were people spending many times that and the cubing in will stop that somewhat, most will go back to apply for one or a few hunts per category. I'm surprised they made the change but as one with lots of points built up I like it, I hated when they went to unlimited applications per category.

So if I have points in a category and DONT apply this year, will I retain those points going forward?

It's basically a big raffle ticket system, the "point" are just extra tickets.

Yes. You just won't get another point added to your total if you don't apply. UNLESS they give us the option to buy a point this year. Never had that option before.

46656, assuming you’re not applying with someone with fewer points than you. That’s just crazy. You better draw this year!
