That’s what I was thinking. Can’t really figure out what might have caused such a massive wound.

I think he was shot. Years ago brother had a buck that came and wouldnt turn broadside. He ended up taking the shot and thought he missed. Fortunately he was able to get good shot in him before he left. His back was laid open just like this buck. Last time he ever took a head on shot.

If this deer doesn't get shot, bet infection will get him.

Looks like to me some redneck poacher thought he had killed him and started to remove backstraps (hence no excessive skin on wound area) and the stunned buck came to and ran off.
