    Feeder battery corrosion

So 2 of my feeders have had the 12v battery terminals corroded up. One feeder both were badly corroded and wasn't working. The other only the neg was corroded and it was still working, but i tried to remove the spades to clean them and the terminal broke off the battery. Is there something you guys use as a preventative on the corrosion? We used to use grease on tractor batteries but i don't want nasty grease everywhere in the feeder unit. Also what exactly causes batteries to corrode?

Just happens over time. More so if the connections are not tight. Might put some vasaline on them
