    Update: Sighting in a rifle

I bought my son a Mossberg Patriot .243 from Academy. I was unable to get it zero’d in using Hornady SST ammo. I upgraded the mounts/rings and scope from the original “package” deal.
Long story short I took many of y’all’s advice and switched to the Federal Fusion and then to the Remington Core Lokt 80gr ammo and we have a winner !!!!

So thanks everyone for all of the suggestions. I think I tried them all, which had to help in some form, but the “find the right ammo” game did the trick.

    The boy is in business!!!

The Remington core lokt ammo has always worked well for me. I use the 100gr in my .243 and the 150gr in my .308. It’s always consistent and performs well. A bonus is the price.

I love it in my .270, and the Fusion did better than the Hornady but not as good as the Core Lokt

I've said it before---rifles are like guys---they have a preferred ammo just like guys have their favorite beer/truck.

Had the same issue with Rem 700 25.06. Sighted in with Core Lokt and then switched to Hornady ammo i planned to hunt with and couldn't get it to group for nothing. Went back to the counter to buy more ammo and the old timer tells me the gun doesn't care how much i spent on my ammo, so i went back with the Core Lokt.

Was it the superformance ammo from Hornady. The SST is a good bullet but the superformance ammo is lacking. Had several different calibers not group. Never again.

I’m in the opposite group as you, I have a Weatherby in 270 win that will shoot the Superformance ammo at .75 inch consistently. I have a 7mag and a little handi-rifle in 243 that will both shoot it slightly under an inch as well, but I have to be on my game to do it consistently.

I shoot different brands in every gun I own based on what each gun likes the most. Some are not picky and others are. Glad you found what works.

I found the biggest issue with target shooting is barrel heat. I have a couple of thin barreled guns tha can’t shoot 2-3 shots in a row without heating up and shooting erratically.

Core Lokt ain’t what it used to be! I’m glad this box grouped for you but don’t be real confident that the next box will.

Have a savage 111 hunter in 308 and shoot the hornby American whitetail 150gr and consistently put 5 in 3/4in circle at a 100 yes. Son in law has the exact same gun and he shoots the corlokt 150gr with same results. Mine don't like the colors and his dont like the hornby. Nothing wrong with either brand. Like stated above, guns have their preference.
