I am a dentist and give prescriptions for these to my patients. You can get them from your physician as well. If the lesions are already present it is too late to start taking the pills. You can use the cream at any time. You want to have these medications already in the medicine cabinet ready and waiting. When you start to feel the "tingling" sensation that occurs before the fever blister appears, start taking the pills as directed and the cream as directed. The lesions should not last as long or be as big. Over time they should appear less frequently. Be very careful touching fever blisters with your fingers. The virus is in the clear liquid that comes out when the blister is broken. Use a Q-tip to apply the cream and wash well if you get the liquid on your hands. If you have a break in the skin on your fingers you can get Herpetic Witlow, which is basically fever blisters on your fingers and they can be very painful as well. I hope this helps, Brian.

x2 on the Zovirax. Been using it for 20 years. The frequency is not nearly as often.

The only thing I have ever used is campho phenique jell (not the liquid). It stays on better and I have had really good success with it. Dries it up in just a few days. It's cheap and you can get it over the counter. Good Luck.

I'm not against trying things, some just over do the crazier ones. Like maybe smoking while applying the ether. Just joking with ya!

Next time you got to the doctor for anything, ask for a prescription of Valtrex. Whenever, your lip starts to tingle or itch, pop a Valtrex pill and the blister never comes up.

Yes. I've had several types of docs prescribe it over the years (due to moving and seeing different docs).

As Brian (the dentist) stated above, a dentist can prescribe it as well.

Also, do not double dip the Q-tip back on the ointment after you have touched the blister once. Use the other end or a new Q-tip if you need to apply more to cover the blister during application.

+1 on the Valtrex. All those creams are a PITA.

                        BowBoy,

This will sound crazy but my wife along with an uncle that I have were having the same trouble. One Christmas at a family party my uncle told my wife that it was caused by black peeper. Come to find out alot of people are allergic to black pepper and don't know it (this is what causes the cold sores and fever blisters in and around the mouth).

If you eat black pepper try laying off of it for a while and see if that doesn't clear it up.

Ive had them since I was about 15 and since Valtrex came out I haven't had anywhere near as many outbreaks. I still use abreva also as soon as it starts. I tend to get them during stressful times of the year at work but for the last couple years have only had one outbreak per year.

By the way, you do realize that you can get this from your dentists office if they do not wear gloves.
