    Dog seizure

Have any of y’all had a dog that has seizures. I have 2 labs and my silver had a severe seizure last night. He soiled his bed and started howling and foaming at the mouth. It was awful. All I could think was he got into something and I was going to have to shoot him so he didn’t suffer. After about 5 minutes he was mostly back to normal. He is fine this morning other then messing up my morning hunt.

My chocolate has had 2 seizures but not as bad. Bad luck? A lab thing? I just wondered.

We had a English pointer that did that while hunting he didn’t start doing it until he was about two years old . He was from low blood sugar my cousin had a dog that did the same thing he was with us hunting one time when our dog did that . He had a snickers in his back pack forced part of the snickers down the dog’s throat he was back up and hunting in a matter of minutes. He kept doing it almost every hunt we just gave him some kind of sugar and water he would go out of it every time .

My Australian Shepherd is on Depakote twice daily for seizures... only had one in past 6 months since she was diagnosed and on treatment. I don’t see a lot of side effects. Was told it was common in Australian shepherds. Sucks to see them have one.

Need to take him to the vet to get bloodwork done and maybe put on some anti-seizure meds.

We had a lab many years ago that would have seizures sometimes. Our vet gave us something to give him when he had one. Been a long time but I think it was liquid Valium. It’s awful to see them have a seizure.

A guy I used to hunt with would give his bird dogs a cookie every now and then to keep their blood sugar up. He kept a bag of these cheap cookies in his pack. About every hour or so he give them a treat.

My GSP started having seizures about 4 years ago. After blood work it was determined that she’s epileptic. She’s been on a maintenance dose of Phenobarbital since with no issues.

Wife's maltese had seizures. Vet put him on phenobarbital once or twice a day and he did fine. Lived to 15 years with them under control.

Previous female lab had seizures. First one freaked me out! Horrible to watch. Blood work showed she was epileptic. Put her on meds and helped though she ultimately had 3 more over her lifetime. Always worried after that when she was on long retrieves in deep water.

Whats it cost to treat an epileptic dog? My blue healer mix has them but she is at the last part of her lifespan, I dread her leaving the farm, she is the boss and my favorite

My 12yo Boxer started having seizures shortly before he passed from spinal atrophy several years ago. It was terrible to watch. The vet gave us some kind narcotic to give to him anally through a syringe with a rubber tip.

Yes, some heart worm flea medicine combo can cause seizures, now there is medicine that works very well for dogs with seizures, 2 pills AM and PM in a marshmallow works like a champ.

Being he is silver I’d start with bloodwork. By breeding for color, we many times unfortunately have many problems with dilute genetics. Thyroid issues are a big problem with see in color dilutions along with skin issues, endocrine disease, cancer and several other things. If bloodwork was normal and toxicity was ruled out then epilepsy would be higher on my list. Many times if I rule out most things I just discussed I may choose to monitor the patient at home for any further episodes. Sometimes it may just be one and done never to be seen again. If it ever last longer than 3-5 minutes then get to a vet thats open. recovery time may be 20-30 minutes but I’m talking actual seizing longer than 3-5 minutes. Best of luck with your dog.
