    Galveston Bay Fishing Report 10/12/20

We had planned a flounder gigging trip in Galveston for Columbus Day. This has always been a bucket item list for me, and as some of you know, I'm currently battling Stage 3 pancreatic cancer, so this trip has real significance for me. Unfortunately, Hurricane Delta didn't cooperate with us and area storms resulted in high and fast tides, and muddy water - conditions not conducive to flounder gigging. We had contacted Captain Greg Very Sr. (409/739-8526) and he told us that we wouldn't be able to go flounder gigging due to the water conditions. I asked him for options and he suggested a fishing trip in Galveston's back bays with his son, Captain Greg Verm, Jr.

This was our first private fishing charter, so we really didn't know what to expect. we met Capt. Greg Jr. at the dock at 1:00 p.m., and he said he would do his best to put us on fish. I caught the first fish, a 13.0 inch long flounder that we had to release as it was undersized. Unfortunately, while Capt. Greg got us on fish, they were all undersized until my daughter, Sarah, finally caught a 21.0 inch long redfish, and then a Sheepshead.

Capt. Greg Jr. did a great job. He took good care of all of us - especially me. He always tried to position the boat so I could lean against the boat while fishing. He made every cast for me which really helped me to conserve my energy and allowed me to fish for the entire 5.0 hours of our charter. For a young man, I feel he was very thoughtful and perceptive, and was sensitive to our needs. We all had a really good time and felt the charter was over with too soon.

I'm hoping I'll be strong enough and healthy enough to schedule a flounder gigging trip with Capt. Greg Jr. during the December flounder gigging season.

    Regards,

    Dave

I was there the day after your trip was supposed to happen....tide was just barely low enough for good gigging, wind was dead (a good thing), but tide wasn't moving well (bad thing), the water clarity was TERRIBLE....saw very little bait in the water where I was and worked my tail off for 4 fish.....be greatful the guide didn't take your money and take u on a poor trip....very honest of him....hope you get to go soon...December will make for super clear water and there will still be large females in the bay system...please post your sucess...ive been gigging that bay for years and it has blessed me with countless stringers of limits of flat fish.....so much to the point where when I cook fish I have to hear the family gripe "aww man, flounder again"....

We stayed in a house next to Stingaree's all last week and during the hurricane. Fishing the day before the hurricane was pretty good. After the hurricane was pretty rough fishing for us. This is the first year we did not go in there and hull them out with limits for everybody. Good catching, we did 7 days of fishing and only came home with 5 legal redfish keepers. So sounds like yall did good catching them.

Thanks all for the kind words and encouragement. I just started on a new round of chemo therapy today which is supposed to be kinder and gentler to my magnificent off-white body 🤠

My son and I were thinking about going on a sandhill crane hunt later this year, now we’re going to have to decide between a flounder gigging charter or the Sandhill crane hunt. I just hope I’m able to go do something with the kids later this year.

Thanks again y’all. Your kind words and encouragement is very greatly appreciated.

                  Regards,

                  Dave
