My 2020 Deer Proclamation....

After careful consideration, I have decided that this fall and every other fall from here on out, we (friends/family) will harvest with bow or gun legal bucks on my place without regard to its score, age, genetics, silly name, what he might “look like” next year and without worry if someone else would shoot or pass.

And when the shooting is done, we will respectfully clean the beast, drink copious amounts of ice cold Shiner beer, cook a big breakfast or dinner and then wind down with a good cigar and crown over ice later that night and talk about how fortunate we are to get to do what we do.

Whew... that felt good. Anyone else?

Sounds like a great plan. I personally like passing on young deer to watch what they may become in future years. But hey if it is a buck someone wants to shoot then fire away. Im way over the entire dont shoot anything before it hits its prime mantra.

By no means was I saying that we’re going to light my place up because that’s just not cool either. And we are going to continue to be good stewards of the land. But it’s time to get back to what deer hunting used to be...

I think that is a great idea! One of the most fun hunts I ever went on was at a deer camp on timber company property in southern Arkansas. (back in the mid 1980's) These guys ran deer dogs - they must have 20 of them - and were not management minded at all when it came to bucks. I asked my host what I was allowed to shoot. He said something like "hey, we're deer hunting - if you see a deer, kill it!"

We are not going to that extreme, It’s going to be more like if you see a legal buck and if shooting that buck makes you happy...then shoot it. 20 years from now I want to look at many pictures of smiling people holding deer.
