My first LDP of the new season

Several years ago my brother and I got together and wanted to make an annual Father/Sons hunting trip. We never got to make good on those plans. My Dad passed in Feb 2017 before we could book a trip.

We never know how long we have here on this earth, so we decided to keep up with our new family tradition.

Fast forward to two weeks ago, we packed up and rolled to Wyoming to Seven J Outfitters for our first ever out of state hunts. The only slot available was the last week of Archery season there. There were three full weeks of hunters in camp prior to is showing up. But that did not stop the action.
We saw at least 100 deer a day. Its amazing to see and the country is beautiful.

After two days, several hunters were tagged out and they started moving clients around to different farms. I was chosen to go with Chance, a young man with a great attitude and go gettum spirit. I hunted a set they hung the day before with not a whole lot of action. The mornings were tough for everybody. Just not a ton of movement and the ones that did, were mostly does, yearlings, or basket racks. I did see a nice 8 pt that i would have shot if given the opportunity, but i was about to lower my bow to the ground and he was 80 yds off going away from me.

That afternoon, Chance made a decision to hang a new set and hunt it immediately. The alfalfa field was wedged between a mountain side and a deep creek. All three features ran parallel with each other. There was a deep draw that fed down into the creek and a good tree to set a stand in. Chance climbed down and I went straight up. This tree was the thinnest tree this fat guy ever sat in. I was waiting for it to bend in half like in saturday morning cartoons.

Within twenty minutes, there were deer under me already. That creek was a major trail they used. I had deer on me all day long, from 3pm all the way to dark (7:18 legal light end). Even had a doe lick the climbing stick we just set up.

About 7:00 i had started getting antsy wondering what Mrs. Deb was cooking up in the kitchen as my stomach growled uncontrollably. There were three does to my left standing near a gate leading to the alfalfa. I began to untangle the pull up rope and glanced back at the does and they were gone. I look down for 5-6 seconds to get another loop out and look back up to see a big bodied buck walking through the gate coming straight to me.

All throughout the day, i had ranged several spots including a dead patch of grass which happened to be 35 yds. I dropped the pull-up rope and grabbed my bow. The buck stopped and turned broadside to look at the does. Just as I drew, he turned back to me and started coming again making it to almost 20 yds. I started to let down so i could adjust my slider on my single pin, but he turns and walks back to the exact spot at 35 yds showing me his tail the whole time. Now i’m shaking and thinking of letting down when he turns the other way broadside. Thats when i touched off and i saw the lighted nock disappear and heard the unmistakable sound of ribs breaking.

He went less than twenty yards, stopped and looked at the does wondering what happened. Then cuts a backflip and never moves again. My first Wyoming buck, my first deer with my Triax, and my best archery buck. That little scrawny tree was shaking so much, i thought I was going to shake every leaf out the tree.

I never did get him scored, but be is going on the wall.

I don’t know what else to say about Seven J. The lodge, the food, the people were absolutely AMAZING. We ate like kings, had plenty room, saw lots of deer and I went home a happy hunter.

My brother on the other hand missed on a palmated 8 pt on day three that he should have shot on day one. But thats how it goes sometimes.
We met several guys there and became friends with. Enough so that we decided to all book again the same week next year.

You can see the Nock and white belly in the same shot. Love it when it all comes together.

    Skinny tree for a 6’2 -275 lb man!!! [emoji15]

And the Elk hunters in camp went 5 for 5 on public land. 4 bulls and a cow. One of the bulls was with a recurve.

All in all, this was a fantastic trip. I’m glad i got to spend 9 days with my brother doing what we love to do. Just wish it didn’t take my father passing for us to finally do it.

Now i write this post, from my tree here in East Tx on opening morning. Even if nothing moves for me, I’m happy.

                        Thanks guys.
I could not help but climb down from the tree to sit alone next to my harvest and just talk to Dad and thank God for his blessings.

It was a great day and a fun filled trip.
The walk back to the road to meet the guide was a teary eyed moment. Thats kinda why most of my face paint was missing [emoji38]
