Old dogs, children, and watermelon wine

This song just came on the radio (Country legends 97.1).

As I was listening to it I heard something different in the lyrics!

The way I’ve always heard the song sung was exactly like this....

“ I was sittin' in miami pourin' blended whiskey down
When this old gray black gentleman was cleanin' up the lounge.”

The version I heard on the radio just now said,

    “old gray WHITE gentleman.”

    WTH?

When did the black guy in the story/song turn white?

I guess the fact that he extracted wisdom and peace from the old gentleman was less important than the fact someone thought it bad a black person was cleaning up as part of his job.
          Crazy times we're living in.

              That's because democrats are racist

              "Content
The song is a true account of Hall's experience at the 1972 Democratic National Convention, where he had a conversation with an old porter (janitor) at a Miami Beach hotel. The porter appraises his own life by concluding that the only worthwhile things are the three listed in the song's title.[3]"

I can’t imagine that 85 year old Tom T Hall would sign off on that.

That’s exactly what I was wondering. If it was changed with his knowledge or the station programmer edited it.

Here’s a video where he talks about meeting the man he wrote the song about.
