    Matagorda Island Draw hunt

My buddies 2 kids got drawn for this hunt. I will be going as a chaperone/adult for one of the youth since they both need adults with them. I seen an old thread from there and was wondering if anyone has been/seen anything out there ? It seems like a pretty cool hunt if the mosquitos are not to bad.

    Hunt will be In December

I went last year for the first time. We were there trying standby and didn’t get picked, but it’s an awesome place. One guy shot a 150ish buck the first night.

Primitive camping, boat ride to get out there, and weather dictates how good the trip will be. There are plenty of deer out there.

Second paragraph sums it up. I’m looking toward to it.

Went as a chaperone a few years ago on the youth hunt.
Most of the deer activity we saw was by the dunes. Our blind was closer to the road than the dunes and nothing got within range. So I would suggest picking a blind that is closer to the dunes than the roads.

Great hunt! Weather dictates...could be cold, could be hot, but it will be windy! Lots of deer and obviously very unique and memorable. Get there early and pick out a camping spot, some are better than others!

Take a rod and some glow in the dark speck rigs and a couple top waters. We caught quite a few trout around the rocks and in the harbor at night when I was there a few years ago. The hunting can be hit or miss. There are lots of deer but seeing them in range is another story

Taking a rod and reel is the plan as well. Do they let you have fires out there ? I tried to look it up but could not see ?

Four of us were there several years a way back. One of best hunts I’ve been on. We went out early and were the first group there. Then the old barracks were there to use. Just like home. Beds, water and lights. Watch for alligators, ratters and millions and millions of [emoji3082]

Take a flat shooting rifle and be prepared to stretch it out. My kid killed a doe and hog there years ago. For at 220yrds- pig at almost 400 yards- He had been shooting at 400 before we went.

Take plastic wrap and make a shelter out of a picnic table area is what we have done. Burn a thermacell in there. Good to go one mosquitoes.

                      Fires are allowed. Byo wood.

I was amazed at how many keeper fish were caught right in the harbor.

I have gone there in October and caught plenty of flounder rolling harbor docks

Definitely carry a couple thermocells and off. Mosquitoes are terrible this year and will be all season long if we don’t get a decent cold snap.

I donated a lot of blood yesterday at our place.
