    Metal Building - Best Option

Considering doing a small barndo (1000-1600 sq ft slab)

In the beginning stages so looking for feedback from those that have done it. Options here:

1.) local guys that do nice work with pipe and pipe trusses and Build them to your specs.

2.) Bolt together “kits” with I-beam and so on.

    3.) wood frame

    4.) other options....???

Just looking for best value combined with quality. Smaller living area with a couple loft bedrooms and then open shop. Pretty simple design in mind.

    Your experiences and thoughts please.....

Good luck. I'm starting to think about the same thing right down the road from you in La Grange.

          Metal Building - Best Option

Just went thru this myself for our new shop and we went with welded frame. I could have saved some $ on materials going with a cheaper 4” square tubing type build but they just seem like giant carports and need allot of bracing. Ours is I beams and 8” purlins. Our family ranch house is very similar but smaller beams and purlins still welded tho. You can get the same exact kit bolted instead of welded with beams and purlins from companies like Mueller, just gotta find an installer. Mueller website has a super cool model tool you can draw up your own plan 3D

          Good luck

Your best and cheapest bet is like Saltaholic did. With weld ups you can put the columns right to the edge of the slab so they are not as much of a problem to deal with when framing. With bolt ups the purlins run by those columns so they stick 8" further out into the building. If you use 4" square tubing for the columns then you can frame the walls with 4" metal studs and keep your walls to a more normal thickness.

I've done three small ones. Use the local guys and welded frames like Saltaholic showed. The bolt ups are fine for what they are but I didn't have confidence in them long term or if something you were going to build out to live in.

I went with a local guy who welded the whole thing up.

You can run the wall girts flush with a bolt up as well.

My advice is don't go smallish. You'll be kicking yourself later.

Mine is I-beam and glad I did it.
