    Water in Fuel

In preparation for the big storm i tried to get my generator started. Would run a few licks on starting fuel but nothing else. I always drained the tank before storing. I found i had water in the gas. The gas i added was all fresh and i later checked it for water. The gen was stored under the open cover outside my shop. I’m trying to find where the water came from. Once i cleaned the carb and the gas tank it starts on the first pull and takes load.

We had a 5500 w GenerAc generator we kept on a utility trailer for work. It was a beast. Well we got rained out of a job site and left the trailer there and generator uncovered due to the heat of machine. Would not start and we took it in to mechanic and the fuel tank was completely full of water. Needless to say it never worked write again.

Maybe the ethanol in the fuel is attracting the water. Gasoline is not supposed to, but methanol and ethanol, will attract water. There is typically more ethanol in the fuel you buy, than the 10% max they claim.

Condensation. Store full with a fuel stabilizer. Run it for a few minutes each month.

Condensation was the only explanation I could come up with but I was hoping someone on here could confirm. Storing with the tank full would solve that problem, however, I plan to convert to tri fuel, gasoline, propane and natural gas. So what I will do is drain the gas after each use and disconnect the fuel line at the carb and leave the valve on the tank open so any condensation will drain as it forms. I will still have to dry the gas tank before each use to clean out any remaining water. This is backup power for my house so fortunately it is used infrequently.
