    Generator Question

I have a 5500watt cat generator I bought at Lowe’s after Harvey. It starts on the first or second pull and seems to run fine, but only if the choke is out and closed. As soon as you begin to push it to start to open the choke it bogs down and dies. Any ideas on what that be?

Might check the card bowl or sediment trap for fuel. Might of had old dirty fuel that clogged it up or even ethanol as that kills everything when you don’t use stabilizer.

Just be careful doing that. Mine wouldn't start. I emptied the old fuel, without tearing it down I gently sprayed it with some carb cleaner. Now it won't run without being at about 1/4 choke. Seems like I may have dislodged one of the small bb's or possibly the diaphragm.

Clean the carb, pull all the jets out and make sure they are uncloged and it should run fine

This. Our generator did the exact same thing brand new out of the box. Cleaned the carb and it ran great. If i know it is going to sit for a while I will either shut off the gas valve and let it run dry or run it until the tank is empty. Last time I ran it was probably 8 years ago and I shut off the gas valve until it died. Today I drained the old gas, filled up with fresh gas and it started on the first pull. Ready to go if we need it.

If you are unsure of how to clean thecarb, look up mustie1 on youtube. He cleans small engine carbs on almost all of his videos

I Drained the old gas out and refilled with fresh. I also did clean the carb sort of. I took the bowl off and blew everything out with air from my compressor. I also took the fuel lines off and made sure they were clean. I didn’t want to take everything to far down because I was worried I would get it all back together right. Will it hurt to run it with the choke all the way closed? Or will it just use more gas?

                        ^^^This IMO

If it has a carburetor I would only burn ethanol free in it. Even with a fuel stabilizer additive the ethanol is a killer! [emoji35]

Put some seafoam in it and let it run!

I had residual fuel left in an empty tank on top of generator, it dried out and left a caked residue varnish in the tank. I cleaned my carb, and still bogging due to the filter in the gas tank being clogged. The filter was a pull plug fitting inside a rubber grommet under the tank, easy fix.

I ran ours for a couple of days on full choke before I had a chance to clean the carb and it was fine. I don’t think compressed air will get it done. When old gas varnishes it is TOUGH to get off. Get some Gumout carb cleaner to break it down. Just don’t get it on o-rings or gaskets as it will dissolve them. Breaking down a carb really isn’t too hard.
