    Re-Title a Pickup

I need some pointers on where to start. I have been looking for a project truck to start working on for my son who will be 16 in Dec. I located a truck that will fit the bill perfectly, but its under unusual circumstances. The truck is currently sitting in a "shade tree" mechanics yard along with about 20 other vehicles in various stages of disrepair. According to the mechanic, he has been in possession of this truck for about 5 years with the owner stopping by every now and then and giving him money to keep working on it. He has not seen or heard from the owner in over 3 years. Mechanic said that the owner was an older gentleman (at least 80 years old). He only has a phone number for the owner and no address. He gave me the number along with owners name to see if I could locate him and find out if he would be interested in selling it. I called the number and it is disconnected.

My question is...what happens if mechanic can no longer get a hold of owner and this vehicle is technically abandoned, what steps, if any, can be taken to re-title this vehicle?

He can put a mechanics lien on the truck and get a title. then you can buy.

A mechanic lien could be used to acquire a title to the vehicle and then the mechanic could transfer to you. Might be worth looking into. Bonded title is always another option.

Edit: Stan was a just a bit faster on the draw.

Is going this route a lengthy process?

Walk away and find another truck. Too much head ache.

I haven’t used them in years but there are title service companies that are capable of providing clear title for a reasonable fee.

I would if it were that easy. This hunt for a truck began 5 years ago when my son found a picture of me standing next to my first pick up (1970 Ford F-250) He inquired about the truck and then said he wants one like it to fix up and drive. In these past 5 years I have come across 10 that are in that body style. Out of those 10, six of them wanted $9000 or more for the truck. The others were either in too bad of shape or owner wasn’t interested in selling at that time.

If anybody knows where I can find a 68-70 F250 that someone wants to part ways with at a reasonable price...let me know.
