Food plot adventure - never done one

Really hesitant on posting this. I don't want to put the cart before the horse. I officially do not yet have a lease. Been waiting a week and half for the contract to be sent to me. I last talked on Sunday and hope to have it at some point this week. Another story for another thread...

When I did my google earth scouting, I saw 2 places that look like they were food plots. One is 1/2 acre, the other is 1/3 acre. When I went and saw the place, it looked more like native grass.

If I were to create a couple of food plots, how do I go about doing this? I believe the process is as follows below, but y'all I can't keep anything alive to save my life. No green thumb here. Plastic flowers even lose their pedals.

Step 1: round up to kill off the grass currently there. Not sure best way to apply, I want to be inexpensive, so I'm not exactly sure how to go about spraying this much land.
Step 2: mow it real short
Step 3: Till it up... Thinking I could take the mower which has a place for me to attach stuff to the back (not a hitch, just a hole in the frame) and make something like what we used in high school to tear up the dirt. Nail drag I think is what we called it. Anyway, tear it up with that.
Step 4: plant the seeds before it rains.

Step 5: wait for stuff to pop up I guess. Maybe throw down fertilizer after it takes off around early October.

How much time needs to pass between roundup and laying the seeds down?
    Perennial or annual?

Thanks for any advice y'all...Much appreciated.

    Step 1.... SOIL TEST

    2. Lime NOW if needed

    3. Spray if needed 2 weeks minimum before planting
( plots that small a back pack sprayer and some leg work will get it done)

4 within a few days of a good chance of rain, spread seed into dead grass

    5. Add recommendations of fertilizer too

    6. Drag or pack dead grass... no need to plow... for any real reason

    7. Pray for rain

    8. Watch for army worms

I don’t recommend putting seed in before mid September and usually first to mid October is better

I have tractor, mower, tiller, sprayer, & spreader. If too tight for tractor, I have SxS w drag tandem disc!

      We could getter done!

You can't hunt "both" plots at the same time anyhow.

I’d just plant feed store oats or wheat. Kill your grass. 1/2 or 1/3 acre you can kill with a little pump sprayer. Once it’s good and dead, broadcast seed, mow it down. Hope it rains. Spread some 13-13-13 when you plant. It should come up good enough for deer. If there is any kind of deer density they will eat a small plot like that up. I don’t have a many deer here at the house but they keep 2 acres of wheat mowed down pretty good.

I would suggest scrolling through the game management threads.
