How do you approach shopping for super duty or 2500 trucks?

I am in the market to buy a 2500 or F-250 for towing purposes. I’ve been in a F-150 for 10 years and now I am at that point where hauling is getting heavier and heavier. Not looking to spend $50-70k on a new but what should I look for in a used. Would want to keep it 2014-up. How do you determine miles and such? Looking for a diesel.

Found a 2015 F-250 6.7L lariat with 223k miles for $24k. How do you breakdown that value?

IMO, you’re complicating it too much. If you think it’s worth that much buy it, if not don’t. That’s quite a few miles, but today’s vehicles will go much farther with timely maintenance and good care. Look at it this way, if you pay $24K for that one, you probably started out $40K in the black. Lots of room for repairs there.

That’s a good point. What’s the life expectancy of a Diesel engine?

Search AutoTrader and compare, compare, compare. You'll get a really good idea of what they cost with the parameters you want.

Man I am not someone who likes to buy new vehicles. I prefer lightly used. But when I started looking for a lightly used F-250 I found that there just wasn’t a benefit to buying used. They hold their value too well. So I bought new.

There are only 3 vehicles that I can think of that I’d buy new rather than used because used prices are so high.

          F-250 Powerstroke
          Tacoma
          4-Runner

Other than those I would buy used.

Also consider interest rates new V used. I bought new in May because it just did not make sense to buy used. My monthly note is nearly the same for a moderately used vehicle V new

Around five years ago I needed a 1 ton to move my tractor and backhoe. I certainly wasn’t going to buy a new one because I now drive half tons. I found a 2008 F250 for what I thought was probably too much but it was at my dealership and had a flat bed on it. Long story short, all I’ve done to that truck in five years is change the oil and filters and put diesel in it. I deleted it as soon as I bought, but I don’t count that because I knew up front that it was gonna be necessary. I’m happy with it at the price I paid.

I wouldn't buy right now in my opinion. I've been searching for 3 months now, and finally calling it quits for a while. Prices jumped 6-7k since I started looking. I was at a dealership yesterday and test drove a new 2020. Afterwards, I said let's talk about price. He said "I'll be honest, there isn't much to talk about." He didn't stutter once as I walked out.

Caraway ford in Nixon has 3 2020 4x4 super duty six power strokes turbo diesel for around $56,800. Ask for Houston and tell them Dennis sent you.

                    I wouldn't touch a 5 year old used diesel truck with a 10' pole.

These new computerized and smogged diesels are one problem away from a $15,000+ fix.

I'd either get an older truck(like my 1997 F350) and do a total restoration and drop in a 12V Cummins or I would buy a brand new truck and drive it for 5 years and then get another(like I'm doing with my 2016 Ram 3500).

I'll probably buy my last new Ram 3500 next year.

By the time I'm done with my next Ram my '97 F350 will have a Cummins and my Mack B61 will be restored and have a DT466.
