What a difference the rut makes.

Lots of folks on here would see the summertime pic of this deer and say he needs another year.

Those same folks see him in November, and will be hoping they’re not shaking too bad to make a good shot

Saw this pic on FB and wanted to share.

Yes, we were having this discussion among some lease members just the other day.

If you hunt in the right County he doesn’t need to

This great is about aging deer in the summer, not how wide the rack is.

Thanks for the post. It is extremely hard to tell anything by the body in the summer, unless the deer is just a no brainer. That dude is a stud.

Yessir! I’ve seen lots of “age and what do you think he will score” pics online lately. 99% of us can’t tell in the summer how old a deer is. I thought this pic would let a lot of us realize that fact.

I’m glad you posted this. My biologist explained this very issue to me long ago and it’s probably why I kill good size hill country bucks every year. I get a good idea of what they’ll look like but I always wait to age anything until November unless I’ve had that buck on camera for many years. (In which case obviously I know the age already).

I like assuming I won’t see a mature buck all year and just culling out my bucks. If one pops up, or if I’ve got one that I’m certain should go then I decide if he gives me the opportunity. But hell, I’ve got a mature buck in my freezer from last year that hasn’t even made it to the taxi. I sort of hope I don’t see a **** thing worth mounting this season lol.
