At what ranges? If you are talking under 30yds, 00, #2 or #4 buck might do the job. What choke constriction is the barrel? Mod if I had to guess. #4 buck shot in 2 3/4" has 27 .24 cal pellets in it. If it patterns well in your shotgun, at under 30yds, it will be devastating. Slugs will work but make sure your barrel is IC or Mod. Rifled slugs tend to be more accurate. I would get a box of 5 - 00, #2 and #4 buffered buck shot and see what patterns best and go with that.

Buckshot should be good to 20-30 yards for that purpose, think of it as bowhunting with a shotgun............you'll want to use "rifled" or Brenneke-style slugs, with some form of rifling on the projectile, in a smooth bore, which should be no tighter choked than Improved Cylinder. I have one of the older 20" smooth bore slug barrels with rifle sights for my 870, with a Choate 3-shot mag extension it does double duty as a home defense piece using 0 and 00 buck, as well as slugs, which are minute-of-bad guy out to 100yds.
