    shotgun ammo question

Okay gun guys heres the question. I have a regular remington 870 shotgun. I want to use it to kill pigs. Do I use 00 buck shot or slugs? Can I use slugs in a regular unrifled barrel shotgun? I hope I explained that good enuff to get a answer. Thanks

At what ranges? If you are talking under 30yds, 00, #2 or #4 buck might do the job. What choke constriction is the barrel? Mod if I had to guess. #4 buck shot in 2 3/4" has 27 .24 cal pellets in it. If it patterns well in your shotgun, at under 30yds, it will be devastating. Slugs will work but make sure your barrel is IC or Mod. Rifled slugs tend to be more accurate. I would get a box of 5 - 00, #2 and #4 buffered buck shot and see what patterns best and go with that.

Buckshot should be good to 20-30 yards for that purpose, think of it as bowhunting with a shotgun............you'll want to use "rifled" or Brenneke-style slugs, with some form of rifling on the projectile, in a smooth bore, which should be no tighter choked than Improved Cylinder. I have one of the older 20" smooth bore slug barrels with rifle sights for my 870, with a Choate 3-shot mag extension it does double duty as a home defense piece using 0 and 00 buck, as well as slugs, which are minute-of-bad guy out to 100yds.

get a rifled slug barrel with sights on it. more accurate and you can shoot farther. if not use an improved cylinder choke and get some rifled slugs.

good dose of buckshot if not farther than about 40 yards just practice and find out how far you are comfortable with

            I love 00 buck in a 12ga 3" mag.
Has been know to take out 6 at a time from 30yds in the moonlight.
All four rounds out of my auto from the front door of my camper trailer.
I did have to finish off one with broken hind legs with my pistol.
