    New Mexico Unit 2B

Has anyone hunted Unit 2B (archery mule deer) in September? I was planning on a scouting trip this month but with all of the craziness going on it doesn't look like that's going to work out. From everything I've read, it looks like the later hunts are better, when weather pushed the big boys out of the high country.

I'm trying to put together a plan using OnX, but never having been in that county it's kind of a daunting task trying to figure out where to start. If anyone has any tips, info or experiences they'd be willing to share it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

I would recommend subscribing to gohunt. They have tons of info on all the western units and have a comment section below in each unit profile that sometimes yields some valuable info. Good luck.

I’ve hunted it with rifle. Feel free to shoot a text if you need some info.

Ive bow hunted in when I grew up there, but that was 25 years ago. Its been very dry, except the last few days. I would focus on finding water and if you can find a location with a private farm growing alfalfa then try to set up locations as the travel to/from the feeding area to the surrounding hills to bed or water during the day.

I’ve got the late January archery tag in the same unit. From everything I’ve heard and everyone I’ve talked to the early hunt is mainly resident deer as opposed to migratory deer in the later season. Lots of that country is heavily roaded from oilfield traffic, id imagine lots of those gates will be open during your season. If you run into any of the pumpers cruising the area stop and talk to them. They are there every day and would know if a good deer is in the area. I have no idea on areas or where those deer are early.
