    pond clean up help

My in-laws have a sweet stock tank/fishing pond but 2/3rds of it are now covered with reeds and cattails- what are methods of cleaning that up so we can fish from the shore and things like that again all while not hurting the fish population?

following. have the same issues with 2 of our ponds. we stocked about 20 non fertile carp, recommended by a pond owner we know. but wont see a difference for a year or two.

Rodeo will work, but you don't want to kill too much at a time.

Stuff works great. You have to give the grass carp a head start. If you have a ton of vegetation you may want to treat 1/2 of the pond at a time as the decomposing vegetation can cause oxygen issues and kill fish if spray all at once. We sprayed a pond that was completely taken over with Millfoil and it knocked it out pretty good, and then put in grass carp about 3 weeks later. The vegetation down deep was still alive. Didn't kill any fish.

You can mix that quart with 3-10 gallons and it will work just fine for a bout an acre pond.

Used to work for a pond management company. Any glyphosate will take care of it with a surfactant added in the mix. We sprayed a lot at one time since the decaying process starts outside the water versus spraying submerged aquatics. If you are worried about it harming fish just spray a little at a time as mentioned above. Carp will not work on controlling cattails.

Will the carp knock back the water lilies? throwing a rake on a rope sucks.

Im not going to say they wont eat it but for the most part carp are used to control submerged aquatics such as hydrilla, southern niad, coontail are just some examples. They are aggressive feeders when they are young and growing. Once they hit a certain age and size their consumption is considerably less. During electro fishing surveys if they were 20 pounds or bigger they got taken out.

After being in the field for a year in a half i wouldn't waste my money on carp for vegetation control. Use aquatic herbicides and treat as necessary.

Use Sonar - easy to apply - not cheap but works great. Do NOT do your pond all at one time. If you do the dead plants and harm your fish due to lack of oxygen. Depending on the size of the pond I suggest treating it 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 over a month long period.

I have grass carp - but if the pond is over taken with weeds they cannot overcome that. They are good after you treat the pond and weeds are dead - the carp then help keep weeds from regrowing.

If you choose a chemical application... wait until the fall when water temps get cooler. Its too hot right now and will deplete O2....I wouldn't even risk spraying a small part of it.

If it were my pond and I planned to eat fish out of it, I sure wouldn't spray glyphosate or any other chemical into the pond.
