    Payment taking methods

Hey guys. Just finished taxidermy school and looking to start a side gig this fall. I’ve heard some bad things about PayPal and the square as ways of taking money. Any recommendations?

We accept payments through Clover and haven’t had any issues in the couple years we’ve used them. It’s like using the Square app I think.

Zelle. Used by most larger banks and no fees.

I have heard of bad reports on Paypal, but I have been using it for my business for about 6-7 years now and I never had an issue

Square and Cash have both scammed me out of 100’s of dollars, my checking acct been hacked by both, thank goodness Chase reimbursement was available

I paid my new guy with square . He has a machine that will print out a receipt. It’s portable so he said he takes it out to the ranch’s with him when he skins animals .

I take payments via 2 Quickbooks accounts, Zelle, CashApp, Venmo as well as traditional checks and cash.

Paypal is not on my list.

Most common method for my business is still checks, although I will gladly pay the small fee when I get paid through Quick Books.

Oh boy. I appreciate all the help but as unsure as ever. Haha. Let me ask this. If I use an app like Venmo or cash app do they have to have it? Or will their card just work? Leaning toward the square even though I don’t like about half of what I’ve been hearing.

With square you just need their card, they do not have to be a member. But, they do charge a percentage. With Venmo, both parties almost need it, lol. There is no charge between subscribers but I believe you can use it if other party is not a subscriber but then there is a charge. I use Venmo to get paid here and there and my wife and I transfer $ to each other using it. I use Paypal a lot also and have never had an issue after many many years. You should have as many options as possible if you want to do business with different age groups etc...

I prefer Venmo. It's easy, fast and cheap. But I can take payment via paypal, cashapp, Zelle, Venmo and Square.

I tend to have more older folks who want to use Paypal. It's been around a long time and they are comfortable with it. Lots of people who use paypal do not use any of the other apps. I tend to have more younger folks use Venmo. Zelle and CashApp have not really been much of anything for me. Square is what I usually use when I have folks pay for a trip with a company card. It is nice and easy and I can email out a receipt quick and easy. I have all my fees saved and can just click, click, click what I need to. The down side is, they hit you pretty hard especially if you have to do manual entry. I can't ever seem to keep up with my little card reader so I get hit. I tell folks who want to run a card on square that I am adding a transaction fee to cover what they charge me. It's about 3.5% if you do manual entry and I think around 3% with the card reader. So for me on a $700 trip plus bait and tip it might cost me $30 to run their card on Square. Paypal is about 3% as well.

I'd tell you set up a couple of them and let your customers' preferences lead you which direction you need to go. It isn't hard to set up any of them.

If you’re doing this as a side gig and expect to grow it, start with Quickbooks and you’re set for life. The last thing you wanna do is get cross with the IRS and Quickbooks makes it very easy to stay on top of tax accruals and payments. Quickbooks offers a free card swiper and charges the same 2.9% fee that everyone else does that’s “above board”. It’s good to have other methods, but do all your billing through Quickbooks and record you’re sales and payments there, regardless of the method that you took the payment.
