I’ve always heard that clogged high speed jets in the carb would do that also.

My money would be on something with the fuel system. I talked to my brother, he had a Merc and had similar issues. They chased a few things down and ended up getting it running. He replaced coils, fuel pump and it ended up being a float switch on the FSM. Not sure if your motor has the same thing, his was a 115. He said best thing to do is get a Suzuki.

Maybe unrelated but I had one years ago that was doing what you describe, took it in and it was the contact points under the flywheel, they were loose and at higher rpms would move and throw the timing off ,

Timing advance should also be checked. The set screw has been known to get loose and not let the timing advance with the rpm causing the motor to bog down.

next time take the boat out to the middle of the lake. Take the little bolts loose than hold it on and flip it into the drink. Paddle back to shore and call insurance. Buy Yamaha.
