    2 way radios

What are the best 2 way radios on the market? I am looking for ones that could have a 1.5-2 mile range even in the big woods and thick cover. Any input is appreciated. I am actually a ham operator, but my hunting buddies are not. We need a dependable way to communicate down in the river bottom.

I'm a ham also. Not very active though. I bought a set of Unidens probably twenty two years ago at a pawn shop for $30. We used them hunting the big ranches out in New Mexico. They worked fine out there. The rechargeable batteries gave up so now I just use AAA batteries in them. Don't overthink this. It doesn't cost much to find good walkie talkies.

You Hammies may frown upon it, but most of the peeps I know use 6 watt marine band hand helds and a few have had them tuned to put out a few more watts.

If you stay "legal", you ain't gonna get any hand held other than maybe a CB radio that will give you 2 mile range in "the big woods"... I have both VHF and FM walkie-talkies that we used to hunt with and now all we do is use them when we caravan in multiple vehicles to our destinations... a mile is about it on these hand helds with any degree of dependability... less than that in big timber like East Texas.

Even the ones rated to 20 miles will not get coverage in timber, even a small terrain change will also affect them. They work by line of sight pretty much.
If it's open timber, park like stands they call them, then maybe you can get some to work.
We have some motorolas we use during antelope and deer season.

You can pickup some Icom's pretty cheap and they have 3 or 4 mile range. They are like 5watts.
