Speaking of mailboxes....when I worked the streets in Jackson, MS. I got called to a vehicle accident, got there and four whipper snappers were knelt down by their buddy and his shoulder and arm were all out of shape. They told me he had fallen out of the back of the pickup and they all stuck to that story. About ten minutes of asking questions, this old man came waddling out to the street and said “I’ll show you exactly what happened to this youngster” at which time he opened one of his two mailboxes and that sucker was solid concrete. He had been the victim of several bat bashed mailboxes and was tired of it.
So I charged all five of them with destruction of person property.

I understand! I slipped off my bumper a couple of years back... no video...and fell about 5 stories to the earth. The bottom of my feet were fine. ONLY the bottoms of my feet. Everything else felt like a truck hit me. I was 45. First time I felt old.[emoji4]

That’s exactly what I did, foot slipped off bumper, other leg was inside the bed. 1st thing that hit the ground was the back of my shoulder. I didn’t think I’d ever stop falling...

I would also have the kid help the mason. I think it would open his eyes a little more and learn a little.

A bunch of years ago the wife and I had been out of town for about three months working. The morning after we got back I was on the porch drinking coffee, something didnt look right so I got up to investigate.
Someone had removed the gas cap from my wifes car and put sand in it. So I called the Sheriff knowing that they would not be able to do anything I just wanted the folks on our street to see them out there, sure enough they couldnt do anything. But it was starting to work out good as the neighbor woman across the street was nosing around as close as she could without actually getting off of her property.
After the deputy left she was chomping at her bit to find out what was going on. Knowing she was the biggest gossip in 3 counties I told her what had happened and that the deputy had some good finger prints.
She left to do her magic.
About 7pm that evening there is a knock on my door and there is a man and his wife with their 15 year old boy. They proceed to tell me that is was their son and a couple of his buddies that did this to my car and they wanted to pay for any repairs.
the man pulled out his check book and asked me how much he owed me.
I told the man that he did not owe me anything, his son owed me, and that I wanted his son to be there the next morning to help me pull the gas tank and clean it out, put it back in and buy me 5 gallons of gas to put back in it. Well the dad was like that is all you want, you dont want any money? I told him your money will not teach your son anything. But laying under that car getting dirt in his eyes and busting his knuckles will. So the next morning I am setting on my porch and here they come the dad stops throws a bicycle, 5 gallon can of gas and his son out and leaves.
We start working on the car and get to talking, come to find out the kid had heard from the gossip neighbor that we had gotten finger prints off of the car. This kid had just gotten his drivers permit and they took his finger prints and he was scared to death that he was going to get arrested and not be able to get his license.
We get the everything done and he rides his bike home.
About 3 or 4 days later I see his dad at the store and we are talking. I tell him how it all went down and he starts laughing. He tells me thank you again for helping his son.
4-5 years later I see this kid again he is in college doing good, he ditched those other boys that wouldnt own up to being in on it with him and he was studying to be an engineer. one of the other boys was in jail and the other had dropped out of high school. he couldnt think me enough for helping him.

I missed the non slip pad on my buddies boat fender with a handful of rods stone cold sober. Pretty sure I did a full circle and trying to catch myself hurt worse than landing. Buddies got a good laugh. No blood, only hurt a few days, and only bent one reel handle. Not too bad. I could have stuck the landing at 21 after a few beers.

I think you are right in that assessment. I just got a text from the dad --
"FYI - the brick mason will come over today. Meanwhile, my son will begin a parent-taught remedial course in "character development"

Had a neighbor years ago wipe out a Limestone mailbox at the entrance to our street. It was like 2:00 am and he was drunk making a midnight run to get his wife a Jack in the box sandwich. Well he thought he made it home safely without getting caught but was too drunk to see the trail of rock debris all the way from the mail box down the street and into his driveway and still with about three rocks and broken plaster all over the hood of his car. The Neighbor just followed the debris down to his house and knocked on his door. Luckily the owner just made him pay to repair it and did not call the police or he would have gone straight to jail.

A few years ago someone had ran square into my Mom’s mailbox, and tore the yard up after the fact. Took about a week and found out it was a cousin of mine. He finally came and replaced it, but never even apologized. Claimed his buddy was driving. [emoji58]

Might be a good opportunity for you to talk to the young man too. I’m sure his father is being hard on him - I was in the military and I can only imagine what that kids in for. However, dads house, dads rules.

I remember my grandfather, who basically raised me, being really hard on me at times. One of his buddies pulled me aside and said look son, he’s hard on you because he loves you and wants you to grow up to be a good person. I know that’s hard to understand right now but in a few years you’ll see some of your friends whose parents went “easy” on them starting to get in serious trouble, not earning the grades they’re capable of, quitting extracurricular activities they are talented in, etc.. Eventually those kids won’t go on to have good jobs, will have personal problems when they start their own families etc.. He’s not yelling at you because he likes yelling but rather because he wants you to have a good life.

I can still remember Mr. Adams telling me those things and it finally made things “click” in my num skull brain because I looked up to him - he was 100% correct in everything he said too.
