    40,50,60 hp outboard technical question.

    1) is a mercury a interference engine? If the timing belt breaks will the valves hit the piston.
    2) did suzuki fix the issue with the pressed on timing gear? Did they go to a belt? Are they still an interference engine?

I have called and asked both companies and no one knows nothing about what they sale. Call a local dealer.....and they dont know.
If I was buying a boat motor based on customer service....I would not be able to get a dang paddle....
    Lol

    Don’t know about Mercury
I run Yamahas on my crab boats, yes.....they are interference engines
Belt jumps or breaks it may bend a valve and scorch a piston, happened once on a 115 of mine, extremely rare though!

I agree on dealers not knowing much about the boats they sell or outboards. You get more info off refuge forums or places like here than you can from a dealer. I’m probably about to go Tohatsu MFS40 which I’ve been told is a great rig. Good luck!

In the market for a 60hp. What’s the importance of an interference engine?

Yea, I have got conflicting info on mercury and I still don't know if Suzuki is still pressing the timing gear on. If you followed the broke down offshore thread, I belive a timing belt was the culprit

Interference engines allow valves and pistons to collide in the event of a timing belt break.
Non interference just stop running in the event the belt breaks
