Depends on the state, some states do not allow mechanical for elk. Idaho does not. If you are using fixed it does not matter.

I shoot 565 gr at everything I hunt. The biggest animal I hunt is elk, if my setup can handle them then everything else is gravy. I also shoot a fixed blade head for maximum penetration at everything.
