    Yak Fishing Port A

Next week I’ve got the family planned for a week trek down to Port A. We’ll be staying at the Pioneer RV resort for 4 nights. One or two mornings I’d like to break away and try to fish from my kayak for a few hours. I’ve never tried this before. I’d like a shot at catching trout or redfish. Knowing where I’m staying and that I’m fishing from a kayak, where would you suggest I park and launch from? Should I fish with shrimp?

Also, my kiddos would love to fish as well if I could find a nice pier for us to fish shrimp from. We used to always fish off the old bridge in Rockport but I don’t think we’ll be going up that way this trip. Any ideas for that closer to Port A? I’d like to eat least see them catch a few fish even if we’ve got to throw them back.

There is a place to launch, or at least there used to be, not too far south of Pioneer, Wilsons Cut. I seem to recall some issue with vandals, hopefully someone else will chime in.

There is a pier in Port A, also the jettys, and further south the packery channel. You could also have the kids fish the surf.

Fish the surf and catch croakers with squid. Packery channel with shrimp. Fishing dock with green lights at night at the JFK bridge.

Was at Packery Channel last week. Live shrimp for the kids and we caught hardheads, croaker and small black drum- not exactly what I would be looking for but it was every cast and the kids had a blast.
For kayak, try Wilson Cut and paddle over to Shamrock if nice and flat. Don't leave anything valuable in the truck. Also, Lighthouse Lakes area is great for kayak as well.
The surf was brutal and not worth it while we were there.

By “fishing the surf” does that mean essentially wading out from the beach and fishing?

And in two posts Wilson Cut was mentioned to be a hot spot for theft. Is there a place that isn’t? Not looking to lose my stuff over this, but I like it’s close proximity to where I need it to be.

And for fishing with the kids, they’re 3 and 5. I need a safe place where they’ll catch fish, but I’m not worried about what exactly they catch.

There is, or was a pond in Pioneer, might check if is is permissible to fish, or even if there is anything in the pond.

Fish around the harbor with small chunks of shrimp with the kids. They'll tear up the pinfish and mangroves! Just across the ferry landing are the Lighthouse Lakes, good yakking.

Anyone used Wilson’s cut recently? I’m reading as much as possible on the thefts and I’m just not seeing a lot of recent stuff. I don’t want to be naive, but it’s just really stinkin close to where I need it to be.

Other option would be to have your significant other drop you off, and then come back?

I’d go back across to Aransas pass and leave out of the Yak Park where the crab man marina use to be. Any body know what the story is with Crabman Marina?

Don’t leave anything in your truck

I guess that’s always an option pending ferry wait times. That’s my only problem with going back across. It’s nothing to get off the island, it’s just a pain in the butt to come back.

I’d pull out my pistol and otherwise I’m not so worried about the other stuff in my truck, it’s moreso about the damage the scum would do to get into the truck to take a look.

To the post about my wife helping. Lol. She’s sweet but not that sweet. And I’ve got to save my brownie points for October.

                              Wilson's cut access

You can't drive out to the compressor station anymore. Gate by electric substation is locked. Just past Wilson's headed south on 361 is a dirt track that runs along the cut for a few hundred yards. They are putting in there, no knowledge of recent security problems. You have a little longer paddle to the shacks or over to Shamrock, but it's good access. Good luck to you.
