    Sands of Atascosa

    Hello everyone, new to Forum.

About to cut my teeth of some small summer food plots. I've read up on what to do, but will take any advice concerning successful varieties or practices that will tolerate the sand.

So far, Tecomante lablab and WI Extreme seem to have the marketing that would apply to my situation.

Thank God for the recent rains!

I see your from S.A. I am out se of SA in Wilson county which is very sandy .I would say the lab lab plus. I have tried everything from cow peas to sweet peas even planted hay grazer in pasture to give deer some ground cover........As long as you get enough water and ferdlizer with it you have a chance of it growing....I been living on my place since 78 and farming it since that time .Now on coastal field I use 15-15-15 at 200 lbs per ac in jan then after first hay cutting I use 18-12-6-16 sulphur at rate of 300 lbs per ac........ By way welcome to TBH..............Andy

Another thing don't plant too early.........Seems like hunters alway want to get plots in ground too early........I work for man that has 200 ac west of Rio Medina. He is a city boy never did any farming so I have to hold him back each year.I just ran a chisel plow throught the plots there last wed now after ran I get the fun jog of picking up rocks from plots before planting them.....Last year I let them plant the plots and they failed very badly so maybe I get free hand to do it this spring......Andy

The lablab is pretty expensive, but it will grow until it freezes in the fall. Cow peas are really good in the sand, if you get a wet year, they will grow until the fall. If it turns dry, they will try to make seeds, then die as they are scheduled to do.

            Thanks for the input.

Andy, how much emphasis did/do you put on PH levels?

            Chris.

Welcome Chris! Keep me informed, as I'd love to get a plot or two in for summer/fall. I hunt Atascosa county myself. Where are you living, hunting, specifically?

I live near Marshall HS in SA, and the property is about 3 miles SW of Leming.
I got the plots disced up last weekend, and did alot of "edge" discing that I read about.

I worked rather hard to get that accomplished before the rains, and I'm glad I did...except now I'm sick as a dog.
