I have customers that get a delay every time, I have customers that get a delay 1/2 the time & I have customers that get zipped through immediately...first & foremost it all depends on what the three computers NICS uses & one pings you, combined w/ the time of call and/or call volume like 5:30 after work or weekend when gun shows are going on across the US.

Firearm purchases have been / are at a very high volume because of our political climate & you combine that with less NICS examiners in the offices due to C19 & you have your answer.

Your name is getting pinged because it is tied to a thug...how long did it take for them to tell you about the delay vs the other two mentioned who got immediate proceeds?? Yours was pinged & sent to a secondary examiner & he/she was too busy to work on your approval when they realized it would take more than a quick glance.

In a nutshell, we likely have less examiners in the offices & a lot of firearms being purchased = a swamped NICS system. Heck, you said it yourself in the OP

If you can get them to call in the 4473 vs entering into the computer, sometimes it avoids a delay for those that a susceptible to delays. It is certainly not a 100% foolproof plan, but I think there might be something to actually talking to a NICS agent.

Unfortunately, many stores won't/can't allow call ins.

So how long do you think it will take? On average?
I am going hunting the 29th and was really wanting to use the new gun.

I've had delays take an hour & never get a call back...I'm not in the same position as the big box places and know all my guys & gals personally, plus very low volume so I have no issue handing out the firearm to repeat buyers I know are solid, but it is very rare. ATF is always quick when the times aren't loco.

I did get a courtesy call from ATF 6-8 weeks ago I guess describing their whole issue & all I can tell you is they are indeed overwhelmed at times, but it shouldn't be near as bad as it was when this all first started.

My advice would be to plan your back up gun for the hunt now & call on the 28th if you don't hear anything. Sorry amigo, once you get you LTC it won't be an issue 99% of the time going forward. Only the most stringent & brazen FFL's will call in to NICS when you have it & those likely have their radar go off maybe feeling the lic isn't legit.

If no further response (proceed/denied) is received from the NICS after three business days you can go get your new gun.

That only works at independent shops. The big box stores will let it set for 30 days then quit on the sale. Most of the time the small shops have as good or better prices.

True. They absolutely hate freedom and are too worried about public backlash.

I used to get delayed randomly in the past as well.

Go buy a 243 or youth 20 gauge (for my son) and was delayed.

                          Go buy a .45, 9mm or AR15 - no delay

Never could understand their logic when it delayed and when it didn't. I would usually call back after the 3 day wait and see if I could go pick up my gun. Walmart and Bass Pro sold it after waiting the 3 days so big box stores back then didn't let it sit. That's been a few years so it could have changed.

I went to Yemen 5 years ago to fish. I was detained by the US in Germany and then passed to the Germans for an interview. I was followed up by the FBI stateside at home. I thought I would never fly or be able to purchase a gun again. Bought two rifles last year with no delays and fly all the time with no problems. Guess they liked the fishing stories.
