tips on dealing with homeowners ins claim

Morning folks, A tree came down last evening taking out my power and part of my roof. I called the ins company and by the second question I could see they were looking for an angle to make it my problem. I've owned this house for 31 years and never made a claim. 3 hurricanes, one semi tornado ( I was outside and could hear the train a comin') countless storms...never a claim. They appear to want to say it was a wind event although it was just rain. They asked if the tree was healthy and I said it was but apparently there was some rot on the inside causing the break but it wasn't visible on the outside of the tree. It was a water oak.

Any advise before I move forward? TIA

It only matters if wind or water so they know which adjuster to send out. We have a few adjusters on TBH, maybe they will chime in.

    .....and God Bless America.

If things go south, an independent adjuster can help.
I have dealt with rebuilding many homes after all the hurricanes and storms for the last 20 years here on the coast. As a contractor I can usually get them to come up a little when needed, during Harvey it wasn't needed during Ike they were low on everything.
They have to ask questions it's there job, use "I don't know" when you suspect they are trying to wiggle out of something.
We are not tree and weather experts so IDK is a good answer

That's what I was wondering too. Same deductible for either typically as well, isn't it?

I’ve been with State Farm for 35 years. They have always been awesome when dealing with a claim.

I am currently waiting on USAA to to let me know if and what they're gonna cover on my roof. Had the adjuster out Monday. They had the initial estimate on Wednesday, now waiting on the revision. Apparently that will take another 5-7 days.

My situation is a little different though. My damage is older stuff that I didn't know about until Chuy came out to give me an estimate on a new roof.

Your dadgum agent should be dealing with this not you!!!!!!!

That is why I do not care about price on insurance as long as the agent has my back period! We have had the same agent snce 1988 on everything we have insured (except life insurance and medical) and they have had my back. I call them with the problem they take care of the rest, get me a check and i get my choice of GC to do the repairs, no questions ask!

After going through Harvey, our new policy is 3 chances to make it right and then lawyer up.

Thanks for the replies folks. We'll see what happens but my initial dealing with them didn't point to a happy ending. Like I stated before. 2 minutes into the call this guy is already telling me it will be a double deductible because of wind. I asked him "How can you make that statement at this point. You can't possibly know if it was that quickly." Then he asked if he could put me on a brief hold. 7 minutes later I hung up because I was tired... and tired of waiting.

From talking to neighbors, it was not a wind event. Just some rain earlier in the day.
