Here is some good reading on different lines. The most comprehensive test you'll find on them for sure.

For my baitcasters I use regular old green 20# Power Pro. You may find that 30# handles better for you. I've used 20# Power Pro since it came out. It was the first braid I ever really liked and it's still good today. I have tried tons of braid and I always go back to Power Pro. There are other good ones on the market but PP has not given me a reason to stop using it. Good value too.
I use 30# braid on my spinning reels. 30-40# braid on spinners will cut down wind knots a whole bunch. Windtamer is good for spinners as well. If you are throwing light lures on small spinners then you may want smaller braid. I use spinning reels for live bait fishing and mainly lobbing 3/4 oz corks. My main issue is wind knots and the heavier braid really cuts down on that.
I'll let y'all in on a little secret, there is a ton of really good off name braid out there imported from China. It's made in the same factories as the name brand stuff and it's dirt cheap. I do not use it on my baitcasters but I do use it on my spinners. After 5 years of hard use on many spinners with many, many customers and thousands upon thousands of fish I am here to tell you it is as good as anything else you can buy for the purposes I use it for. You can find it on Ebay and Amazon under a variety of names and in every color you can think of. The bright more vibrant colors will fade quickly but the line does not weaken. The more muted colors don't fade as bad. It'll last a long time and when I have to cut out tangles and wind knots I don't cry near as much. I think I usually pay about $20 for 1100 yards of line. They have 4 strand braids and 8 strand braids so pay attention and make sure you are getting what you want. I just use 4 strand braids for my spinners. If you want a specific brand to look at I have been using Hercules off Amazon lately and it's good line. There are several otherbrand names as well. The names change but it's the same line. You'll see what I mean over time. The labels will look the same but the names change. Hercules 4 strand is what I am using right now.
For leaders I use clear 20# Trilene Big Game for lures and clear 30# Trilene Big Game for live bait. I used flouro for many years and honestly other than being a stiffer harder leader that sinks I don't see much difference. I don't like flouro with topwaters and I don't notice any difference in fish catching whatsoever with soft plastics. So I buy 1/4# spools of both and you get a whole lot of leaders for $7 per 1/4# spool.

I'm not telling anyone not to use a FG. Use what you like. if it works for you, great. I am just telling you what I find works better for me. Everyone should try both and use what they like. Throw a uni to uni in there too. Some folks like it better and it is a dependable knot.

NM, you posted while I was typing.
And you are correct about being a challenge to tie if your out very deep. Luckily I haven’t had to.Last edited by bboswell; 06-24-2020, 10:53 AM.

I put 30 on my baitcasters and 20 on spinning. the 20 seems to backlash way easier than 30 on my baitcasters. still plenty of line on them with 30lb.
I usually just buy whatever bulk spool of 1500-3000 yard line is on sale. doesn't really make that big of a difference as all the big name common brands are fairly close to one another.
