    Ag exempt and sales tax?

Since my ranch is Ag status I have it set up at Tractor Supply where I don't pay sales tax.

Is there a way to set up the same thing at Lowe's and/or Home Depot? I saw on Lowe's where one can register for a "Pro account" but Ag/farm/ranch isn't listed.

Also what about tax on gasoline and diesel? Is this one of those end of year add up and fill out form reimbursements?

It depends on “what you do on the property” according to the state tax office.

I don’t know what state you are in but you fill out your states version of this:

Information about Texas tax exemptions for farmers, ranchers and timber producers.

Then you get an ag exempt number. Then you just use that number for ranch related purchases.

Yes you can go to Home Depot or Lowes front returns area and they will fill out the forms and put in by your phone number. Take your tax number card with you, can do the same at Harbor Freight. Lowes won't give both veteran discount and use tax id so I just use the 10% veterans.

You can buy red diesel with a permit. It is extra from the Ag tax permit. Not sure can get a reimbursements on the taxes you pay for regular diesel or gas. Never tried.

I'm registered at Home Depot and Lowes. I use it there when I am buying things for the farm. Not personal use.

If you save your reciepts when you buy fuel for "off road" use, (Gardening, lawn care, boat, tractor, anything not driven on the road) you can deduct the road tax you pay for each gallon you use from your income tax return

Buying red diesel is a pain to get approved. I've done it years ago. Good luck.

Save all receipts for your schedule F on tax returns and write off all fuel costs for farming

As mentioned yes Home Depot and Lowe’s will both accept your AG info.

On diesel the laws are a bit funny or at least what I was told by a tire shop. I was trying to buy new tires for an livestock trailer and brought up my tax number. They claimed if it touches a highway you can’t claim AG on it. Seemed weird but didn’t fight it.

Scott - your tire dealer is wrong. Ask them about Farm to Market Roads and what if you drive your combine down those paved roads? Are they not ag use?

What if you are hauling calves to market? Is that not a legitimate ag use? I just put tires on one of my trailers and they didn't even ask me for the ag exemption.

River Rat - when you find a place that sells red diesel, ask them how to get approved to buy it. Producers Co-op made it real easy - we were already members and we had to complete a short form certifying the red diesel was for off road use only. I think every road construction company and farmer in the area goes there.

How much is this red diesel? I ask because I don't use a lot of diesel..maybe 15-20 gallons a month. It's the regular gas tax that adds up with 2 side x sides, generators, boat, etc.

I think I know how to get that gas tax back. Was just hoping for an easier way.

But I'll get on that Lowe's list... Thanks.

I used to have to do home depot every time I went in.

Right now? Um... let's see... I filled 3 x 5 gallon containers last week for $21. Only the state sales tax is removed. Federal taxes still apply.
