If it will run on starting fluid the your problem is fuel. I don't know what carburetor you have, but some have a hard filter right where the fuel line connects.

With the line disconnected at the carburetor, attach a length of 3/8 fuel hose over the line and clamp it tight. Place the other end in a catch bottle, safely away from the distributor area. Have someone crank the engine over while observing the amount of fuel delivered from the hose. If a half pint or more in 5 seconds the pump is providing fuel to the the carb. No fuel tells you to go tracing backwards in the supply lines (including pump). A fuel gauge attached to the hose will give a pressure reading ( should be about 5 PSI).
If fuel volume and pressure are within limits, the carb is not delivering fuel. A needle and seat can stick at times and not allow fuel into the carb bowl area. Of course the fuel filter should have been checked at others have mentioned. There is a small spring that goes in first and the the filter, make sure it is in the proper direction of no fuel will flow into carb.

Remember my post #18 about the needle and seat sticking closed and not allowing fuel into carb. A tap and it allows fuel in. Now will this hold or maybe the needle fails to seal and gas floods the engine. Sounds like time for carb overhaul by someone that knows the QJet carb and how to fix it properly. Replacing with a worn out remanufactured carb will possibly bring on more problems. A new edelbrock will be best bet but may be too much money by time you get it fitted to your engine.
Most of todays mechanics have experience only with fuel injection systems. Do not let just anybody overhaul that Quadrajet or they will mess it up. Good carb if you know how to fix it properly, but the average mechanic will just make a mess of it.
