Educate me- paint power rollers/ sprayers

I just got the quote from a local painter to paint our new construction home. I’m glad I was sitting down.

Having painted the old Cali home’s interior several times, I’m ready to do it myself.

I’ve used rollers/ extensions in the past, past- but with a 3,400 sq ft home + 1,200 feet of garage and workshop I’m looking for a productivity gain.

One option is a power roller. Press button and keep painting out of the 5 gallon pail. The other is a sprayer- which I’ve tried a cheap one years ago and returned.

9’ ceilings and the floors are not in yet- all the windows need to be taped and protected. The vaulted living room will be wood so not painted.

    What says the Green Screen?

An airless sprayer would be faster, but I think may use more paint. Just guessing probably around $400 for a usable sprayer. It seems like there was one for sale on here a while back.

Graco sprayer with a 18" extension to the spray gun and an extra 50' of hose
      You will not regret it

This right here. You could rent one just make sure that you clean it before you pump it full of paint.

Sprayer is the way to go. Repainting a house I a different animal than new construction, that new sheetrock will suck up the paint and you will be rolling forever.

I just bought a Wagner Control Pro 150 for around $250. You drop a tube from the powered pump into a 1 gallon or 5 gallon bucket and use the 25' hose on a sprayer and go to town. After spending a day on a roller painting my deck, I painted the 2 stall garage in 1 hour. The paint is very controlled and very little over spray. Well worth the money.

When we painted new construction we used a sprayer and had another guy following back rolling to even out paint. Basically using sprayer to apply the paint but still roll. Original coat was PVA which is a drywall sealer/primer, this was in Utah but isn't common here in North Texas. Use bigger tip spraying walls to get plenty of paint like a 617 or 619 depending on spray rig handling the .19 tip. New walls need a coat of primer or cheap flat paint then second coat can be a quality Satin or Egshell to save some money vs 2 coats of expensive paint. Cheap flat paint can be tinted same but not all primers have enough room in the can to tint the same.

Sprayers are great if you are painting everything one color, but multiple colors sucks. What are your plans for the doors and trim? With spraying that is another thing that needs to be taped and protected if going different colors.

Did the painter have tape and float in the number he gave you?

Are you going to apply texture?

Tape off the windows, go buy or rent a nice sprayer, and go to town. No way I would attempt that big of a job with a roller, powered or not.

Any pro would use a sprayer on that job. Especially when you dont have to worry about edging floors and ceilings.

This^^ make sure you use flat paint to seal the drywall. You can get cheap flat paint at HD, you can get 20% off if you use my discount, PM me if you want to do that.

Tape and texture is being done by the drywall contractor. I can see spraying the primer coat, and then the ceilings. Do you then tape the top edge with the combo plastic tarp sheet/ tape and then spray the walls?

The doors are coming pre stained as is the trim, so they’ll go up after the painting- as I understand.

Assuming you are spraying a clear coat on ceiling wood. I would drape walls in plastic when doing that. Clear coat splattering on walls may show creating different sheen when painted. Yes on covering ceiling with plastic but use masking paper along edges its amazing how much plastic moves when spraying and you don't want it coming loose risking overspray on ceiling or falling down on wet walls
