We drove from Taos up to Taos ski valley once and there were people camping all along that river but it was a bit crowded for my taste. Thanks for the feedback so far.

Thanks for the info guys. I think we’ll stay a night in the Valle Vidal unit and see what looks good from there. We’ll be in our “lease ride” z71 Tahoe and will probably attempt Goose Lake in it if the water at the river crossing isn’t too deep. Good news is the ranch in Fort Sumner isn’t too bad of a drive when we’ve had enough.

Thanks again for the info guys. We camped two nights in Valle Vidal and one night off the road going to Greenie Peak. Valle Vidal was just awesome. I didn’t have high expectations after spending so much time in Colorado so I was surprised. This is surely the prettiest area of New Mexico.

My family loved greenie peak. We camped next to creek further down and drove my ranger up to greenie the next day and cooked lunch on the grill in the back of the ranger last 4th of July. Then spent the next day and half in the tent hiding from the rain. My family loved it. Prepare for 40* weather and rain.

You used to be able to ride ATV or drive a Jeep up there. It's been 20 years since I've been. Check the rules like mentioned above.
From there, go on up to Horseshoe lake, and since you've made it that far, finish the hike up to the top of Wheeler Peak, the tallest mountain in New Mexico. I've been up several times.

You should be able to get to a lot of the lakes just fine.
