Isn't middle fork that trail that has that hellacious switch back the last mile? We did that last year and tried to maintain our pace and it kicked our rear and I'm in decent shape.

We drove from Taos up to Taos ski valley once and there were people camping all along that river but it was a bit crowded for my taste. Thanks for the feedback so far.

So I'm not sure what the camping rules are, Goose lake is pretty far off the beaten path but it can be crowded during the day, but I rarely see more than one person camping at a time.

PlanoDano gave you good advice, check with the FS local district for dispersed camping rules in that area and look over the MVUM , the map is free in person or can be viewed online.

There will be plenty of places right above Ft Sumner in the Lincoln. Lots of ATV trails that will get you off the main roads and lots of awesome dispersed camping.

Thanks for the info guys. I think we’ll stay a night in the Valle Vidal unit and see what looks good from there. We’ll be in our “lease ride” z71 Tahoe and will probably attempt Goose Lake in it if the water at the river crossing isn’t too deep. Good news is the ranch in Fort Sumner isn’t too bad of a drive when we’ve had enough.

Be careful, last summer somebody rolled a truck off the side of the mountain and they rolled about 300ft to the river on the Goose Lake trail. The people were ok, but they were going to have to get a helicopter to retrieve and lift the truck out of the valley.

Thanks again for the info guys. We camped two nights in Valle Vidal and one night off the road going to Greenie Peak. Valle Vidal was just awesome. I didn’t have high expectations after spending so much time in Colorado so I was surprised. This is surely the prettiest area of New Mexico.

My family loved greenie peak. We camped next to creek further down and drove my ranger up to greenie the next day and cooked lunch on the grill in the back of the ranger last 4th of July. Then spent the next day and half in the tent hiding from the rain. My family loved it. Prepare for 40* weather and rain.

We saw upper 30’s Friday morning. It was brisk. We were at 10,000’. Saw some other guys closer to Greenie that probably were a few degrees cooler and in the wind.

Is it possible to get an f150 to some of the good lakes to fish (wondering about narrow shelf roads that an f150 cant or shouldn't go on)? I have been wanting to go there for a long time to camp and fish.

                          Middle Fork is great!

You used to be able to ride ATV or drive a Jeep up there. It's been 20 years since I've been. Check the rules like mentioned above.

From there, go on up to Horseshoe lake, and since you've made it that far, finish the hike up to the top of Wheeler Peak, the tallest mountain in New Mexico. I've been up several times.

You should be able to get to a lot of the lakes just fine.

Be careful, there was a F-250 at the bottom of the ravine on the way up to Goose lake last year. They said nobody got seriously hurt after it slipped off a 200ft ravine. They also said a helicopter was going to have to hoist the truck out.
