Sounds like oil is getting the gas and burning.

Did you accidentally put weed eater gas in it?

Sounds like it’s running to rich and needs a carb adjustment

Have you changed the oil and plugs lately. Put some new gas in with Seafoam and see if that clears it up.

Its due for oil change. Its the 2350efi model. Was thinking about changing plug at same time. Probably need to change air filter too. It has sat outside in the rain since we sold my parents house.

It’ll white mole some if gas gets in the oil, I just went thru this my hustler, bad gas so I changed the contaminated oil, new plugs cleaned dual air filter, took the carb off and cleaned it thoroughly. No more sputtering more more hard starts, I found a QT that sells non ethanol gas no more problems on my Kawasaki motor

Might need a new air filter.

                      A full service wouldn't hurt.

Not sure that will help the OP with his problem.

Post #5 has your answer. Plugged up air filter causing it to run rich, not enough air, hence the black smoke. Oil will cause blue smoke.
