    Going from 1099 to W2

I work a semi part time job as a project manager for a roofing & Construction company. When I moved from full time to semi/seasonal we agreed I would stay 1099 as my other job is full time and I’m not “required” to make meetings etc .

Well they’ve changed their mind and are requiring me to be w2.

There were some tax advantages to being 1099 that it seems I’m losing by going w2. I work and will continue to work from my house. I can no longer write off paper, toner ink, certain meals, hotel, vehicle etc. I was planning to build a shop and allocate that space as “work” as it would house certain materials I used etc.

It just seems I’m getting the short end of the deal here. I understand why they made the move for all of their full time guys, but it seems like this is unnecessary for me and harms my tax position.

Am I not thinking about this correctly?

The main tax difference is that you will no longer be paying self employment tax. if they are paying you the same amount as a W2 employee, you should be better off.

but now the company would decide if they want to reimburse you and deduct those expenses.

I'm an IC as well with the potential that the future buyout of where I'm working is going W2. Not sure what the actual tax difference is between the self employment taxes and W2 social security etc....
