    Garage door help

Have a 1/2 hp liftmaster that works.........some of the time. I've replaced the motor capacitor and checked all the wires( nothing loose found). It'll go for 2-3 weeks not working and then it'll decide to work ( for a day or two).
When it's not working the light still comes on and you can hear the motor "clicking" on then off. Oh ya, its about 35 years old. Thanks

They make new, better and improved ones. If you spent 35 years raising the garage door, you would need weeks at a time off too.

    .....and God Bless America.

Ya, this is my basic thought but I hate spending money when I don't need to. Thought it might be an easy fix

You don’t HAVE to spend money. Disconnect it and open the door by hand. Problem solved for free!!!!

When you say it is clicking, does it sound like an electrical click or a mechanical type of click?

There is a difference, just hard to put into words. lol

Try one of the new chamberlain's. We put one in a year or so ago. It is quiet, belt driven, easily adjustable, and comes with a keypad and remotes. Also, you can use an app to open and close the door, and the app will tell you if the door is opened or closed. I installed it myself, and no offense, but if I can do it, anyone can.

I got one doing the same thing, mine is a mechanical click. I thought it was jammed but it's not and it's intermittent. I have a new opener in the attack, just being lazy on swapping it out.

If you got 35 years out of a garage door opener, you're already WAY ahead of the curve. That's more than double their average life. Time to treat your wife and yourself to a new one.

I just added a $30 smart controller to mine and feel that will be a game changer. We are bad about not remembering to close the door when we leave. This solved that. So, as suggested, go smart when you replace that POS.

Ah, ok. Probably a plastic gear that went bad. Might still be available to replace and probably only a few bucks. Or the one in the attic might have swapable parts.
