    Offshore charter help

Instead of doing a week long family vacation this year we decided to do two smaller family vacations the first was a trip to see the OKC thunder play...our game was the one where they warmed up then left the court without playing and our second is up in the air as well. My family now says they want to go offshore for a day mid June. Any recommendations for a port and boat/captain then? Probably Texas or maybe even Louisiana. It would be me, my wife, and 2 boys 15 and 12. Preferably lots of action. Fishing all day for a big bluefin tuna would be awesome for me but this is NOT the goal on this trip. lots of action and multiple species would make for a great day tuna, kingfish, dorado, sharks are things they have mentioned.

Thanks in advance for any help trying to salvage our vacation.

If you want Texas check out Capt. Mark Holland in Matagorda, tell him Philip Davis sent you. I’ve been fishing with him 2-3 times a year the last 8-9 years. His website is www.matagordasportfishing.com. The guy holding up the grouper on his website is me from 5-6 years ago. Louisiana is another awesome place, we fish with Capt. Eddie Berger, you most likely won’t catch a bluefin but there is a ton to catch there, especially tuna(although both trips no yellowfin for us). If you go to Louisiana take an extra day and go bowfishing.

Or if you want to ride in a bigger boat call my buddy Clay, he’s in matagorda too

We offer fishing charter boats in Matagorda & Port O'Connor. We offer offshore fishing, inshore fishing, bay fishing, nearshore fishing, & surf fishing.

I would go to Venice and rent a house boat in the marina. One of the local charters can pick you up the morning of your trip from the house. I used super strike charters when we went, you can book the house boat and pay for the charter all on their website. Mexican Gulf charters, Voo Doo and several others all have good reputations. Check them out on Facebook they are hammering the tuna right now.

If you end up in Port O'Connor, TX I'd give Rusty a call. I've been with him several times. June you will be catching Red Snapper, ling, and Kingfish. Great with kids, and very nice guy. Also just for the record, if you go to POC, you have to eat at Cathy's. I recommend the fried shrimp.

Thanks guys! Does anyone have any input on these guys? http://www.surfsidebeachcharters.com/rates.html

I am assuming they aren’t going out near as far since the rates are $1000 a day instead of $2000 like the others recommended above. Saltwater fishing is not something I know a lot about.

Head to Veniece, stay in cypress cove and book with championship charters....captain chandler will put you on the yellowfin in his 38 ft center console....your sons will remember it forever

Never heard of them so I went and checked out their Facebook. Honest opinion, if you’re happy just catching fish, then you’ll probably be fine. But if you want to go offshore fishing, that’s not what this guy does.

Try mike with reel Threel charters out of Surfside. I go twice a year with him, giant snappers and everything else you can catch. Look up his website

Honestly you can’t compare Texas vs Louisiana- my family owns an offshore boat and we fish out of matagorda year around. Here’s what you can expect from each honestly-

Texas in June- snapper, kings and possibly a ling on a 50-60 mile out trip. Grouper are very hard to find because of the overpopulation of snapper. Most charter captains are loading up on snapper and kings unless you pay extra for a deep drop type trip for deep water grouper or tilefish. You can do an overnight trip for tuna but it’s a long ride 130 miles out and family may not like that.

Venice or grand isle La- day trip to beautiful blue water <50 mile run. Target tuna and swordfish. Snapper are a bonus on the way back in too. The experience of la offshore especially Venice is absolutely amazing.

My .02 you cant really compare the 2 fairly it’s a different fishery and scenery

Thanks for looking. I am a cheap azz so I was hoping for a good trip for cheaper but I the more I think about it the more I want to make this a trip of a lifetime so I am going to look at changing gears to Venice. I know it is late in the game to be booking something like this so I hope we can make it happen!

Venice is a real good time offshore fishing. You can rent a cabin there and it’s pretty inexpensive. There’s a nice restaurant in the marina, and that’s it. Lol. Like I said, we fished with Eddie Berger but when I go back I will probably try someone different. We didn’t have a bad experience or anything, just to change it up. There are a ton of charters there and they all catch fish. Mexican Gulf, Paradise, Super Strike, VooDoo Charters, lots of good boats and captains.

Thanks. I am looking at booking one of Super Strikes 40’ yellowfins with triple 350’s if I can make myself pull the trigger. It looks like Vodoo has boats available when we want to go as well. It looks awesome but wow I wasn’t planning on spending this much for one day of fishing!

Thanks for all of the advice. Panhandle Hunter where do you hunt? I grew up in Hartley County up there.
