    Diy dog training???

    Hello green screen!

Long story short, the wife and I put a deposit down on a GSP pup a couple months ago and thanks to the “rona” I’ve taken a 40%-ish income hit. That will probably take 6-10 months to recover. We aren’t worried about bills or anything, and are still slowly being able to put back savings, but have decided that we can’t afford professional training for the pup anymore.

I am primarily looking for general obedience training, then shed hunting, and then enough retrieving ability for an occasional dove hunt.

I had dogs growing up, but wasn’t actively involved, as a kid, in their training. My dad did all that. I haven’t had a dog in 15 years, so I figure I should do things right. It’s easier to train one right from the start than to fix a problem entrenched in habit later.

I am looking for some good, basic book resources for the three areas of focus. Obedience, shed hunting, and retrieving. As well as any YouTube channels that may help along the way.

I know GSP’s are typically used for upland game birds, but I don’t have access to quail hunting. So, I won’t even bother with worrying about that.

    Stonnie Dennis
    Freddie king
and bill hillman are whose videos I would recommend.

The dokken book was decent for an over view of training but I’d recommend. What I learned was immerse yourself in as much material as possible. Cause trainers do things from all angles and learning your dog you’ll see what works best with them.

Although obedience is fairly universal . Clear as mud? Good luck

Richard Wolter’s “Water Dog” is another good one. He also has a “Game Dog” and “Gun Dog” book, I haven’t read them.

A typical GSP is smart and tough, which IMO is the easiest combination if you’re ok with using a physical approach, which has become unpopular these days.

Make sure the dog knows what you’re asking it to do before you correct it, and don’t repeat commands over and over when it has learned them but is choosing not to listen.

Be consistent, be patient, keep sessions short, and let the dog blow off steam before working it. Taking a crated GSP out to a field and expecting it to sit, heel, etc before it has run for 30 minutes will drive you nuts.

Many years ago, I used the book "Gun Dog" and had great success with a Brittany. And, I had no experience or knowledge about dog training.

I have a 7 month old lab I have been going through the training process with. I bought and read both Water Dog and Game Dog for the training. Me personally, I would recommend Game Dog if choosing between the two. It is the newer of the two and it appears the author (Richard Wolter) changed some of his thoughts in the 20 or so years between the two books (specifically around timing of where the dog should be at certain ages/phases).

Another thing I 'll add that I wish someone would have reiterated to me early on - The slip lead leash/choke collar can work wonders for obedience at heel and such. I figured this out later than I would have liked and it quickly has fixed some obedience issues.

Is that anything like the Easy lead standing stone uses?

Excellent advise here. I have a 5mo old GSP and he knows the difference in his collars / leashes. Don’t take em’ long to figure out the business and the dress up one. Be consistent and follow through with commands given. As said above burn some of their energy before having them focus on tasks. Mine loves his place board. It’s like home base for him during workout sessions. And by all means crate / kennel train him or her.

Here is my dog working the other morning nothing to crazy. trained him myself. Followed Freddy King videos and read forums. Patience is the biggest thing I can say has helped me and not over working a young dog. I think we have all tried to get just a few more retrieves or reps out of a dog, when in reality ending it on a high note and doing it again the next day is the best bet.
