We used to hook them off the Copano Bay Causeway pretty often when I was a kid. Didn't land them often since the pier is about 12-15 above the water. We used to fish for them using a Penn 209 and a heavy surf rod or off shore rod, it was good to keep is kids busy. Used to use old hardheads that people would leave on the pier, strangely enough they love hardheads.
Got one up on the pier, about like the one in Dale Moser's pick or a hair smaller, by lassoing him. Didn't have a good enough equipment to try to clean him at the time so we rolled him back in the water - looked like Clint Eastwood in hand -Em High with rope burns where we took a few scales off.
