What’s best for keeping algae out of troughs

I have two 275 gallon water tote systems setup at the ranch that work great but the troughs they are connected to are constantly covered in algae. What seems to work best for keeping the troughs clean or mostly clean anyway?

Probably a couple drops of chlorine per gallon

Drop some copper or silver in it.

If you have Clear Totes like I do ... Paint them Black or some other color so the light won't get to the water... Algae will develop if you don't .. Photosynthesis.
Everyone of my water containers are Black ... No algae and it gets hot enough to kill any mosquitoes .. Use paint and primer for Plastic. Thoroughly wash the outside.
I also periodically add bleach and have had zero problems.

Goldfish or one of those floating chlorine dispensers.

If the troughs are open to the sun, I doubt anything will Stop it. Shocking with chlorine, scrub, drain and loose the water. The sun is powerful and algae loves it even in normal light chlorination to a degree for consumption. Snails can do A LOT if water is general use and not for consumption. Add a few Nerites and add a little salt from the aquarium store so they multiply. They eat a Lot. Not for drinking but I might drink it anyway?

i have made the mistake of too much bleach. deer hate the smell of chlorine. maybe a cap full of bleach to the tote every few weeks would be ok.

I have an open water trough and this was built in 1930, also have a water tote system set up too. I have to keep algae out of the cement trough because the algae will take root to the side walls and create other problems. Tractor supply sells livestock safe algaecide for tanks and troughs, it also stains the water to eliminate any sunlight penetration that promotes algae growth. 1 gallon is 50.00 and will last 3 years. You will need to treat the water in the totes, about three capfuls per tote. Makes real pretty water and takes good pics too.
