    Which Jeep to buy?

Im going to start looking soon into getting a jeep. I have been looking online some and wanting advice from you guys as well. Im not looking for a daily driver. Want something that is capable of going 70 down the highway. Mainly going to be used for taking my boat to the river, hunting, and just all around pleasure on the weekend. Also if another vehicle is broke down not be scared to hop in it.

As far as price wanting something under $5k. Is that possible and what years would you stay away from. Will definitely try to get a 6 cyl.

    No square headlights!
It's probably going to be hard to find a good one under $5k, but not impossible. Definitely want to go with a 6 cylinder, especially if you're planning on using it to put in your boat. Make sure you're able to drive it up to 70 mph. Some get the death wobble and it can be hard to find the cause.

I love my 98 jeep TJ. I got mine for $3,900. But as you said I would've preferred a 6cyl. Good luck to you.

That was one thing I meant to mention. Its just a little flat bottom boat so nothing real heavy and if im hauling it I wouldnt be going far. How weak are the 4 cyl. Will they go hwy speeds not loaded down. When i got to where I am putting in or in mud holes i would imagine low gear it would have enough power? Is that right?

Go on FB market and search Jeep cj. There are a bunch out there. I'm currently looking for the same thing and I'm talking to someone right now abut buying one. I recommend a cj5 or cj7. Much bigger bodies and way cooler looking than the wranglers. Find one that has had a new engine put in. The one I'm looking at has a 350. I'd also pay a little more if they already have the lift and bigger tires vs going cheap and doing it yourself. The downside is most of there do not have ac and/or heat. But, what I'm looking for is just for fun and not my primary vehicle. Plus, I only have to pay liability and not full coverage.

I bought a 98 TJ to do exactly what you are wanting to do. It has been great so far. 4.0 - 6 cylinder automatic.

              I'll always be a fan of the 97-01 XJ's

              3 inch lift with 31's or 33's

I don't have a 4 cylinder, but a friend does. He's planning on changing to a larger engine soon. I think as long as you keep it stock, the 4 cylinder might be ok. Once you lift and add larger tires and more weight, that's when it becomes a problem.

I have owned 4 Jeeps. (Note my name Rubicon. Drove one when I joined TBH)
TJ will be your best bet. Easy to work on. I had a 97 4cl and a 2004 rubicon. Max speed with the 4 is about 75 on 31’s. There is still a ton of after market stuff to upgrade as you have funds.
Although, I found a CJ7 a few years back for 4K. Loved it but it was a money pit.

Good luck and welcome to the addiction!

Honestly, you would be fine pulling a small flat bottom with a 4cyl You would only be able to go about 60-65 tho. Yeah, as long as you have good tires, you won’t get stuck. I put BFG Mud Terrain 31s on my 97 TJ with no lift. Took the boys out plenty of times off roading. No issues.

Got pulled over doing 80 in grapevine in it. lol.

                      Just my experience with 4cyl.

                      Good luck

When I was looking at them you ain’t gonna get much for $5k... might be exactly what your wanting! I didn’t find anything I was certain enough to the grocery store and home for less than $12k asking

My 4 cyl were a beating on hwy. Will do 60 downhill with a tailwind....was fine for puttering around and hunting but that would be about it. The 4.0 6 cyl are very reliable motors, seems like the Cherokees go forever with them

I’d stay away from the 4 cylinder engine for sure. The 1998-2006 models are great, but staying under 5k would be a stretch.

I wouldn’t be afraid of buying a tj with over 100k either, they last a long time.
