Does anyone have any recommendations for a log splitter that is under $500? How do the electrical ones work? This won't be for commercial use, but just for splitting logs to use at home in the fireplace.

I've cut a lot of wood. Splitters are the best thing since sliced bread. But not under about 28 ton. Where I use a splitter the most is on stuff that is very difficult to split with mauls and wedges. and the lighter duty splitters won't split them either. I used to select "easy to split" trees, to avoid trouble, but I can't really do that anymore and have to take what I can get, which is often gnarly, twisted and large old trees that dead or blown over. So whether gas or electric, I'd say 25 ton is minimum. Don't know if they make an electric that size.
