Buying a utility trailer with no title...?

Is it just a no or a absolutely hell no?

Sometimes the deal seems almost worth the hassle and was curious just how much of a hassle it really is? Anyone that doesn't respond to my title question or says they are not the original owner get a easy pass but this guy says he is the owner and just cannot find the title unfortunately. With me possibly getting this thing at half price from it being new I'm kicking the idea around.

Buying in Harris county for reference and if he actually is the owner of the trailer what all would I need to do to transfer this sucker in my name? Is a bill of sale sufficient then off to the DMV?

Just bought a Can-am from Justin so now the trailer part is here and I am completely new to it.

    Thanks guys.

I believe if the trailer is rated for 3500 and under, It does not require a title, with that being said, I wouldn't but any trailer that current owner can't show current or past registration on it under his name or without a title under his name

This is dual 3500lb axels so above that rate.

Didn't know if there is a document I could have them sign if we could find a receipt or something to work with

he can get a copy of the registration from day one from the county or state,, if it was ever titled he can get a copy of that title,,, if he can not/ will not supply the paper work, move on to another trailer forget this one

If you get the registration and a bill of sale you can get a title pretty easy. I have bought dozens of trailers, not all with proper paperwork and some offices have given me a hard time and others just take care of you and get it done.

Good luck in Montgomery county. The hardest county in the state to title a trailer without a title. Been there, done that.

Sounds too good to be true. He could of financed it and the bank is holding the title. He can apply for a lost title at the vehicle registration office.

In Bexar county they have Detectives inspect the trailer first. It is a PITA

Would the seller apply for a lost title, and then complete the sale to you (after title is received)? I wouldn’t buy used without a title. You’ll end up in a JP court on a property hearing on a trailer purchased below market, with no title.

I have been looking at trailers also. I have found several that claim they are home made and do not have a title or registration. I have passed on all so far. The owners claim it’s easy to get a title. My question to them is if it is that easy get and then we will negotiate from there.

Most of the time I just hook up and pull it. My tags are expired more times then not on my trailers. Heck, the plate might not even be there. Can't tell you the last time I checked it.
That being said, I'd get the title if its suppose to have one.

Here in Van Zandt county it is not a problem at all. You find way more trailers without titles then with them. I don't have a title on any of my trailers and hope I never have to mess with it. Good luck.

Just weld you SS# on the frame and register as homemade.

Take any decals off of it or the DPS will talk to ya about it

I've bought several with a bill of sale and registration papers.. trailers registered as farm trailers won't be issued a title in my area. I've never has a problem with the bill of sale.
