“Last of the Mohicans” ... a BOWhunting recap

Disclaimer: y’all know I’m tech deficient... so this might take a post or 2. Not meant to be a cliff hanger.

Last year I thrashed Hogs till I got a Charlie horse in my trigger finger. This year since March 1 I’ve already beat last year’s record of hogs in a month and a half (187). I’ve pillaged them on all properties with all tactics and left all free of hogs! (Temporarily).... except “The Cottonmouth”, a small property I lease. I trapped the whole sounder there in March, but left one lone boar. A worthy opponent, that I hoped to bowhunt.

    Attempt 1.

Last week I got a rare North wind, needed to get into this stand. Got a kitchen pass and headed up the tree... at 7:00 I could hear neighbors or grandkids doing their best to try and blow up some type of atv, with no muffler. Maybe they seen the last hog and where chasing him (no clue, their land). Anyway I know from pics, he’s always wet, so he has to be in the creek on property line (reason for needing N wind). Well at last 10 minutes of light I hear a hog grunting and barking, but he’s on my south side??? With almost 0 wind he does the double grunt, and I never saw him. Probably 30ish yards..... FAILED!!!

This week has been non stop but after dinner tonight I ask wife if I could make a quick hunt. He’s never there till 7:00 anyway. Got in stand by 6:35!!!

At 7:10... I hear the unmistakable flopping of ears! Last week there was no less than 40 pounds of corn on ground... today all gone but the 6:00 feeding. I look to my East and my opponent has entered the octagon!

From pics he never stays long, and there ain’t multiple hogs to shoot so I’m ready to strike at first opportunity. ..... which took about 2 minutes and he offered me “The shot”.

Being bored for a month... I’ve been tinkering. And this hog is exactly what I was wanting 220-240 BOAR. You know with the titanium shield that 338 Lapuas bounce off of and arrows under 20000 grains explode. Time for a test drive!!!

Since the release of SlickTrick that’s what I shoot... it works for me, always has... it’s what I shoot. BUT for such a hog I needed MORE! Soooo I loaded some “FACT” weights in and upped to a 125 COC MUZZY PHANTOM (really like the broadhead). Hand sharpened and leather stropped. It was surgical and coming in at 430gr (from my life long 390)

@ 21 yards he slightly quarters and I aim for opposite center shoulder.... He took it like a champ! Looked like 9’ of arrow sticking out. But it was on the money!!!

I was 99% sure I hear him crash, and in this old cutover I could see him wrecking trees... and my arrow with all these bonus parts in it. After 15-20 I climb down and take a look, expecting to be disappointed due to what seemed extremely poor penetration.

But he was burning oil from impact! And within 20 yards spraying blood. (I can’t stress enough, use SHARP blades. And that don’t mean NEW... SHARP)

After a Long and winding blood trail that went 50... maybe even 60 yards (didn’t have my gps). There laid “The Last”... the one no trap could catch.

BUT!... I found the back half of arrow. It broke when he hit a tree on the exit side! It DID pass through the Roman shield and by blood on shaft went 20”ish through him. That was great (I’ve done it countless times, so didn’t ready prove anything yet). Exit was center where I wanted and got a pass through with 60# 28” 430 on a 220-240 (guess closer to 220).

Had good lighting... if I could see the sky and nobody to help with pics. So I did best I could in this jungle. The last hog on this property has fell. I’m sure it will start all over in another 2 months, but it will be nice while it last!

Well done Kyle! Helluva shot too!

Those 420-430 grain arrows are deadly!![emoji41]. Who’d have thought you could get it done with them (and a Bowtech[emoji12])with a blood trail like that on a pig that size. [emoji51][emoji2]

It is hard to get that close to such a beast too, good job working the wind and playing the area right
