I was pretty sure until the striking picture and then I was positive, plainbelly watersnake.

And that was the reason for my first post!

They'll do that. I twisted me ankle really bad over a pile of rattle snake belt buckles I was working on. Phone rang, distracted and busy talking on the phone out of the corner of me eye glimpsed the rattle skin buckles, all hell broke loose jumping back of the porch getting away from a rattle snake. Thought for I was going to get bit for sure.

If it's grouchy enough to get testy and strike at me, then it's gonna get a whoopin' with a stick, whether it survives or not is totally dependent upon its instinct for self preservation!

And that was the reason for my first post!

Plus the square patterns on it's back. I don't go by the head shape or what shape the pupils in their eyes are when identifying snakes. I've learned them by the patterns. I've seen snakes that have been skidded over by a vehicle or chopped up something fiercely bad and I could tell what they once were even if the head was unrecognizable.
