    Yes they can be trained to protect them. It helps to get them as puppies and raise them with what you want protected. In your case you will know soon enough. They will either guard them or eat them.

    I’d also recommend an invisible fence or something similar.

    If I was you I wouldn’t do it. A live trap will be much easier to protect your animals. Then you don’t have to worry about the dog being part of the problem

      It might be hard to get the dog used to the chickens. You can probably do it if you spend some time with him and not let him kill one to start out. Our GP grew up with our layers and he doesn’t bother them, but I think he would have killed them if I just threw them together. He is going to need to learn you want him to protect the chickens.

          No pets! Less human contact the better. Best livestock protecters think they are part of the herd.

            I catch them from time to time trapping coyotes. I don’t know much about them, but I’ve caught the miles from their home. That makes me think they like to roam.

              They do travel. I was in the front yard pulling weeds and felt breath on my neck. Turned around to find a HUGE dog. Thankfully it was friendly.
              My bud in the country has 2 that come by from time to time..............
