    axis deer hunters

im looking at going after my first axis this year. I have a property lined up that hunts them year round. its my understanding the best action is late spring/early summer. personally id rather hunt them during traditional texas hunting season, mainly due to weather. im just wondering if there is a disadvantage to waiting til cooler weather, fall/winter, to go hunt them? I plan t hunt with my bow and I want a hard horned buck, which the property manager is all doable, summer or fall.

Generally, there’s going to be more hard horned summer bucks than winter, but you can find them anytime.

My experience has been, if you are hunting a feeder, good grass conditions can hurt your chances. Unlike WT deer, axis are grazers, not so much browsers, so if range conditions are good, they will slack off the corn. I’ve experienced this and others have told me also. Good luck, they are delicious !

This is true, but you can increase your chances by putting out better grass than what is naturally available. Like Alfalfa and Chaffehaye when Axis are on the grass and shy away from corn feeders. They prefer grass.
              Good Luck they eat great!

This is the reason I would hunt may-june. Shot most of my bigger axis in early June. Find their travel routes.

May June is the best. I have some that just shed, some that just rubbed velvet, some close to tipping out, and some that are still a month out.

I've had 2 of them but haven't had any luck getting one in bow range with one. I like the product and its a great company that stands by their product.

Like said above, on our place, Winter months, the Bucks either are broken up, starting to shed their antlers. 1 day they are hard horned looking awesome, next day they've lost 1 or both antlers. You may see some shooters, but majority have lost their gear or are regrowing and/or in velvet.

After a buck rubs off their velvet approximately how long do they keep their antlers before shedding them?
